Ignoring the story, is the single player gameplay of SC2 any good? Specifically, how does it compare to SC1?

IMHO, the Wings of Liberty campaign is varied enough with enough alternate and secondary objectives that I feel like it's the most well rounded single player campaign in an RTS

There is a cool mix of escort, survival, squad maps, and other levels and I found the Brutal difficulty challenging enough without feeling like complete bullshit, it is one of the only games I have ever gone back and gotten 100 percent achievements because I had so much fun with it

Ignoring the story of course, which loving renders all of SC1 pointless.

Nooooo. I haven't played the Protoss one but the Zerg campaign was 1000x more fun than WoL to me. In WoL every single one of the first, like, 20 missions is just "build lots of the unit you unlock in this mission and then attack-move to victory". And gently caress that time wasting mission with the day/night cycle that takes absolute goddamn forever because heaven forfend you miss ONE building.

Most of the WoL missions are far faster to complete by not using the units that the game suggests. I remember in particular that just spamming marines works really well on a lot of them, and ghosts with nukes are good for most of the rest.

It's better than SC1 I would say. You actually make "choices" and stuff to power up your units beyond what they would be normally, or in multiplayer. There's even branching paths and stuff. There's literally zero other RTSs on the market right now so I say if you are even passively interested you will enjoy it. Also you can download something called Mass Recall which is the entirety of Starcraft 1 in the Starcraft 2 engine. It's very very good. You can actually play that with the current free version that exists right now.

Oh I already have the full version of SC2. I just finished up that video's instructions, I'm not used to things like this being so easy :) Gonna try it out now

edit: the latest SC2 patch seems to have caused some issues, but they're easy to fix and get it working. drat this is a trip down memory lane without going backwards in time to a much worse interface

Watch_dogs gets a super bad rep but it really isn't that bad. There was a bit of controversy at release because it looked pretty much nothing like it was advertised as AND it was at least partially because they wanted parity with the console version of the game (the prettier files were even included in the PC release but inaccessible), but taken as its own thing, it's a decent GTA game with an interesting but criminally underused gimmick. The multiplayer can also be extremely fun.

Years later, I'm still not sure if the story was an attempt at a commentary on how video game heroes are actually violent, deranged vigilantes or if the game really was this tone deaf.

Unless you're talking about uPlay, in which case I can only agree.

I'm pretty sure you're right; it's just difficult to accept that anyone, even at Ubisoft, could seriously design missions around beating mentally ill people into a coma because my phone told me they were about to start a fire, or invading innocent people's privacy in an activity actually called "Privacy Invasion".

Some other games can get away with that by making a strong protagonist, either by letting you be so righteous that the bad things you do can be justified or so evil that being bad is part of the fun. The lead in watch_dogs is just so bland and poorly-written that you don't get away with that. It's a shame, the game was reasonably fun, but as others have said, torpedoed by poor writing and severely average gameplay design.

On the plus side, yeah the pretty E3 graphics are fairly easy to unlock and not even that demanding to run. The downside is that they clearly weren't meant to be used to actually play the game, they're just there to show off- it makes some areas too dark to see, blurs and blooms too much sometimes, etc.

Barudak

The lead in Watch_Dogs is the rare Father/Uncle and the story never stops being hilarious because of it.

Dark_Swordmaster

Watch_Dogs is, in fact, bad. The missions are boring and unfun, the driving sucks, the story sucks, the controls feel bad, the abilities are plain and boring, the main character is aggressively bad.

It's nothing to do with the graphical controversy, it's that every single system that makes it a video game is, at best, passable and not worth your time.

By all means, for free, go for it. "What do you have to lose?"

But don't say it isn't a bad game.

I agree with that sentiment in regards to the main plot, in which you associate with (many, many) criminals, cause a city-wide blackout, indirectly kill your allies, etc. Just another day at the office for a protagonist. But in Watch_dogs, sidequests include watching 100% innocent people having sex by hacking their webcam and stalking people and beating them up or killing them BEFORE they commit a crime. The main way to accrue money is by hacking the bank accounts of completely innocent bystanders. One of the best ways to evade the police is to cause obviously deadly car crashes by hacking traffic lights. You get a pat on the back if you bust a cop's kneecap (instead of killing them).

I mean, the game opens by showing that you basically killed your daughter niece because you were a petty criminal who crossed the wrong people, and the game ends by you almost indirectly killing your wife and son sister and nephew because you're a petty criminal who crossed the wrong people. You could not possibly design a character with less of an arc.

Of your 2 allies, one is obviously a literal psychopath, the other one is French Canadian. Also, she dies because of you. I'm also French Canadian, don't hate

You kill deadmau5.

Human trafficking, slavery and serial murders are just regular old collect-a-thon sidequests.

Some of that HAS to be tongue in cheek...

I also cannot get over the fact that there's an activity called "Privacy Invasion".

I know a lot of Suda51 fans didn't like it but I'll definitely go to bat for Killer is Dead, its core character action gameplay is some of the most competent of anything his team has put out and aside from a really gross dating minigame that is thankfully only mandatory once to unlock some subweapons it's just the right level of weirdness to be interesting without being completely impenetrable. Also the soundtrack is by Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) and is pretty cool.
