Just a plain old Cherokee. Manufacture plate actually says 1994. I goofed again. Thought it was '95.

There was someone who wrecks jeeps that I had the phone umber for a couple of years ago. Not sure how to find him again though :(

Yeah shipping to Australia was about half of that cost. If it wasn't the socket bit for the splines that was broken I could have fixed it. But it was. The hole for where the wiper arm pivots was the weak point.

I got the transmission oil pan mostly done. Took me all goddamn day. Just have to torque it in about 1/2 hour and get that dipstick tube plugged back in and re-mounted. Oh and tranny fluid tomorrow of course.

Fun things:
* Oil clay dirt sludge falling into the pan when trying to remove it.

* Cross threaded drain plug! It's what, 8mm long maybe? That takes some special effort.

* Old gasket smooshed to over 3x its original width.

* Random finger tight pan bolts.

* Lots of black silicon and lumps of the original brown sealant.

* Stuck filler tube (of course), and someone had partially crushed the tube at the right angle where it goes into the pan so I had to be careful

Beyond that, just the usual getting covered in ATF.

I had someone tonight ask if I could get p clips in bulk, say 0.79/ea was too rich for his blood, then bought packaged ones off the shelf that were $1/ea.

He then complained that the exhaust pipes he picked out had different thicknesses, then complained when I proved with a pair of digital calipers (with a stated 0.002" margin of error because lol $10 parts store digital calipers) that they were 0.0015" different and were fine for 1/16th inch wall pipe. This was a great injustice upon mankind despite the fact that 30 seconds with a file cleaning up the cut edge fixes his problem.

Then he started a rant about how this was "all them drat japs fault for being a bunch of theiving scumbags" (the pipes measured 0.0625 and 0.064, he got extra), so I figured I'd be helpful and point out that the bulk pipe was made in canada and cut, flared and bent at a factory elsewhere. This just made him angrier because I was obviously lying, canada doesn't make anything, its all a scam because their labor is cheaper anyways.

I swear I'm gonna just stop trying to help the customers. They apparently just don't want it. :v:

Motortrend went to an Wannagofast event for their modified show. I went to one of the florida events in january of this year and it was awesome. The sheer sound of violence on some of those cars just is not captured on camera and needs to be witnessed in person. If you have one of their events in your area, its definitely worth the trip. The pits are also open so you can walk around and talk to the drivers, owners, guys who run the performance shops and of course lots of vendors. Its just tons of gorgeous high horsepower cars going flat out and a really good time all around.

That moment when you plug your power-hungry phone into your car charger.. then smell something letting the magic smoke out. Then you notice both your work and personal phone have stopped charging (dual output charger, USB A and USB C outputs.. work phone is microUSB, personal phone USB C).

Looks like I get to warranty the USB C to USB C cable. If I plug it in (even without the phone plugged in), the charger dies and gets hot, and the far side plug on the cable gets pretty warm.

I thought Cable Matters was supposed to be one of the more trustworthy USB C cable makers... this is the second one I've had fail (both from the same order last summer). They warrantied the first one fine, wonder if they'll warranty this one too.. decent USB C to USB C cables are kinda spendy for a cable. :smith:

There's some dude on amazon that reviews a bunch of them that works for google that tests the specs of them. There's a lot of lovely ones out there.

(and can't post for 11 years!)

If you mean Benson, he used to recommend these cables. Looks like he doesn't anymore, but at the time he said they did comply with the standards. It may have been Nathan who was recommending them at the time (and the last version of his spreadsheet still recommends them for the Pixel), but either way, /r/Nexus6P strongly suggested these cables as being one of the best of the cheap cables. They also said the car charger I have was the best cheap one, aside from popping out of the power port easily (looks like it's also been pulled from Amazon.. go figure).

I'm guessing they just had crummy solder joints within the plugs that came apart. The cable in my car sees very heavy use (plugged/unplugged multiple times per day, up to 30 times a day even), the one at home gets used nightly (but the phone is usually on the bed next to me, so occasionally gets rolled over on, cat jumps on it, gets knocked off the bed, etc). Kinda surprised the home one failed before the one in the car.

I have some Anker USB A to USB C cables for when I want to plug it in to the PC (and it seems like he really doesn't like Anker's cables - usually Anker's stuff is pretty well regarded, but I've had very bad luck with their cables too), but I only use those when I need to move files between the PC and phone.

Amazon reviews for these cables nosedived before Cable Matters pulled them, I'm guessing they just didn't hold up to heavy use very well.

I'm using the OEM cable that came with the phone in the car for now, and Cable Matters sent a new cable for the failed cable I was using on my home charger. The OEM cable is only 3 ft (which is useless for home unless I'm charging it off of a countertop outlet), while the others are a bit over 6 ft (perfect for your typical outlet if you want to use the phone while charging, or if you live somewhere that isn't Groverhaus, i.e. I don't have outlets every 2-3 ft in every direction).

I'll probably go ahead and order the AmazonBasics cable Benson gave 5 stars on even if Cable Matters replaces this one - pretty surprised to see an AmazonBasics product praised, they're usually pretty cheaply made.

Possibly/probably. I had that thought. The wheel arches, door bottoms, and rockers I could see were solid though. If there's rust on the least-difficult section to replace, that's not necessarily a death sentence.

Now that I'm a better computer I'll reply more in depth. Yeah Danny is right, that one looks like a lot of rust - plus side: very few compound curves on eary vans, so if you ever wanted to practice splicing in sheet metal, this is the platform to do it.
Vans are freaking rad. The earlier ones are radder. Danny and I dabble(ed) in 2nd gen Econolines. I wish we had 1st gens, for even more flatnose weirdness.

If that G-van is less than like $1200 I'd probably get it just for fun.

I actually bought one, along with the motor and all the squirty bits, and added the rear wiper to my '95, and I think that whole mess cost me maybe $20. Should fit in a poster tube for shipping.

But read what I actually wrote. The car must be kept in the garage, that's fine if it's a condition of the policy. Having it out the garage within a mile of your house voids a theft claim. Not storing it outdoors. Just being out of the garage. That it utterly unacceptable, and loving ridiculous.
