Plus it would be better to minimize the loads on the cooling system until the car actually needs all of it's power to keep accelerating.

I own both of those cars in Gran Turismo and it's a crime that they are only available as low-res models

This thing here rules, it's an early navigator. You manually loaded a map of your area (they were printed on transparent plastic) and manually gave it a fix on your current location. It would track your movements through a combination of accelerometers and an internal compass, and show your position on the map on the CRT screen, with a marker that shone through the map slide. It was finicky and extremely expensive, and couldn't even give directions, and ultimately a flop. Why not use GPS you ask? because it came out in 1981, predating the civilian availability of GPS by several years

The cutout device in the back is the internal gyroscope that was used to measure rotation and acceleration

According to the Honda writeup about theirs, they also had trouble sourcing appropriate maps because real maps aren't quite accurate to where roads are (to prevent overlapping roads).

quote:

The company that had sold them the map was contacted. It was then that the team learned about the general inaccuracy of cartographic representations.

For example, on a map of a 1:100,000 scale, a road of 10 meters wide is shown via a line only 0.1 mm thick. However, in an area where many roads run close together, a number of thin lines will necessarily overlap, making the map difficult to read. In such a case the roads are shown by ignoring actual distances to a certain degree. This practice, called "deformation," has long been common in cartography.

It was eventually decided that maps would be created specifically for the experimental system. However, the team was forced to make a detour because of this incident.

Yes, I remember that! This always was my favorite part:

quote:

A system that does not lie obviously means an infallible one. For example, a calculator that could not compute the correct results would not sell. The same logic applies to navigation systems. Customers wanted perfect systems, so the development staff faced tremendous pressure. In those days, Nakamura would often have dreams about evaluation tests, and in those dreams the car would deviate farther and farther away from the target route, right in front of Kawamoto. He would panic, only to wake up and find it was a dream. It was sheer torture for him.

Yeah, there's really no need for them to go all artsy-fartsy, there. They're lovely technical illustrations, done in a unique and interesting way. 'Nuff said.

I would love to convert one of my non-running RX-7s to electric. They're actually well-suited, given size and weight and the OEM engine position, but to get reasonable performance out of it would cost more than just rebuilding the rotary. Decent motors and controllers are still pretty expensive, not even getting into good batteries. And I don't want a glorified golf cart. I want at least equivalent performance to the stock 12A, and 60-100 miles range. It's unfortunate that money *is* an object.

edit: I'm hoping that by the time I actually have time to mess with it, yet before I'm too decrepit to do so, the bits will have gotten significantly cheaper and more common. The controller is a big sticking point.

RC is pretty bonkers compared to when I was a kid. The battery tech alone is light years beyond what we had in the 90's, but the motors are what really blows my mind. More power, zero maintenance brushless, and options the size of your pinky exist if you want to go small scale.

Or if you want to say goodbye to your wallet and go big, take a look at the nitro powered stuff.

Kinda surprised Tamiya doesn't make a 69 Charger body.

High school buddy had just finished saving up for his RC10 which at the time was THE CAR to have, put that bad boy together, then had a radio problem the first day where it stopped responding to input and tore off into the distance at full throttle and slammed into a curb. Totaled the suspension of one of the front wheels. :v:
