The bodycam recording buffer snares another bunch of idiots: https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2017/11/09/lapd-bodycam-video-appears-contradict-officer-testimony/ quote:Ronald Shields, 52, was arrested and has been charged with felony hit-and-run and possession of cocaine. The officers were called to testify in a pretrial hearing as Shields attorney challenges evidence to be used at trial.

It seems a bit mad that the cameras don't pre-record say, a random number of minutes up to maybe an hour, otherwise every corrupt cop is just going to think, "Okay, I'll plant this illegal evidence on this guy, wait 30 seconds, and then hit record and 'find' it". Or is it just intended to catch out the really, really stupid ones?

I imagine the buffer is a surprise to a lot of departments until something like this happens. Overturn every single conviction those guys have ever been vaguely connected to.

on the one hand, cops are dumb enough that they dont realize theres a buffer, so lol theyre getting caught by themselves on the other hand, the cams need to be on constantly while cops are on duty, this is just the tip of the iceberg

Re: celebrity gropers/rapists/molestors. Recently, I finally sat down and watched House of Cards. Two days after I finished season 5, Spacey was accused of sexual assault. A week ago, I watched both LCK specials on Netflix, and we can all see how that has turned out. I guess what Im asking is, who does the thread want to find out is a sexual predator next, because apparently Ive found my superpower.

Eh there is at least one legit reason: interviewing victims. Seems like the 'turn camera on' button could be replaced with a 'don't release this footage without 10 levels of review' button in that case though.

Police officers will stop needing recording when they stop murdering unarmed people for no reason and planting guns and drugs.

Incorrect, they will always need recording to ensure to they do not and can not start that again, and also for their own protection against false accusations.

It surprises me that this is a thing (and to be honest I don't want to think to deeply about WHY it's a thing). It did remind me of an interview of Dov Charney, the American Apparel founder and gross human, where he jerked off in front of the interviewer and she seemed cool with it The Black Table posted:In [Claudine] Ko's article, she asserts that she witnessed Charney jerk off more than eight times in one month. Try putting yourself in her shoes; sent out to interview a huge bigshot & if you gently caress up you're fired. Also you're very young, and also the celebrity is a serious adult and has connections. Also I didn't know he was bisexual, so I guess good for him finally coming out in the worst way

Powaqoatse posted:reasons 201-300: Reasons 301-infinity: The cops creating a panopticon and keeping a permanent record of every single thing they see on the streets gives the government an almost limitless power to blackmail and oppress at will. It's bizarre to me to see people arguing for ubiquitous surveillance on the grounds that it protects from the cops. That would be the opposite of what would happen. A whole lot of what those cameras would capture are of people who have an *expectation of privacy*. Who are you going to trust to keep those videos? The same cops who routinely violate privacy in accessing peoples' personal information today? Think about domestic violence, child abuse, medical response, human trafficking, sex crimes, etc. Cops should have their interactions with the citizenry recorded, it protects the people they're interacting with against bad cops and it protects cops against baseless accusations. That is no reason to keep a record of every single person who is merely a bystander when something goes down, and it's hardly a panacea against police abuse. They're perfectly willing to kill people in full view of the public, while being recorded by smartphones. I've previously suggested how I'd do things: Cops get two body cameras, 5-minute buffer, press the button to start recording when you interact with a suspect. If you "forget" to press the button, you are fired. If somehow, both of your cameras manage to "malfunction,", you are fired. But this, of course, presupposes the ability to easily fire cops, which if existed would itself obviate much of the need for body cameras in the first place.
