The funny thing is the word bitch was allowed, because context matters (the context being referring to a female dog).

Safe harbor only applied to broadcast TV and radio. Cable TV and satellite radio weren't bound to it, which allowed Howard Stern to take his show to Sirius and not run into legal problems. Naturally, you're not going to be too successful if you're basic cable and you have people dropping gently caress in the middle of the day, so most cable stations adhered to safe harbor anyway.

HBO and Cinemax obviously said gently caress that and went full on porn at night, but they were premium channels and could get away with it.

One of my favorite things about radio today is that you can kind of tell when a song was released by which words are censored in it, and also whether anyone managed to get an updated radio version. In the previously mentioned Teenage Dirtbag, the work "dick" is not censored, but the word "gun" is. But the Offspring song Why Don't You Get a Job?, released a year earlier, has the word "dick" censored, but not the word "bitch". It's kind of strange.

My favorite is still Undone by Weezer, where one of the first lines in the song is "god drat". Rather than do any sort of masking or bleeping, some edits just remove the line entirely and mess up the rhythm of the song.

Yeah, it's like people yelling at a cashier at a supermarket because of the price of milk. Even if I don't necessarily agree with their weird loot system or whatever, targeting developers for decisions made by a huge game publisher and an even bigger entertainment conglomerate is really the stupidest thing.

I remember Comedy Central used to have a late night "WERE NOT CENSORING ANYTHING" hour or whatever. I watched it once and it was a Bo Burnham special and they bleeped a joke about the Holocaust during their non-bleeping hour so I guess I didn't really understand the point.

Reddit is now demanding an Ask Me Anything session with EACommunity like the PR team is going to be able to discuss motivations and processes around business decisions.

It just sucks because the system EA has in place (decision-makers never have to explain themselves to the customers, PR team is deliberately left in the dark) is working exactly as intended for a huge company and a whoooole lot of very angry people don't seem to get it.

edit: I can't stop cringing at this poo poo, oh my god

quote:

So, u/EACommunityTeam

How will your company change your PR strategy in the face of such harsh public backlash? Any decent PR team would know that the Reddit hate is just the tip of the iceberg. People have hated your company for years.
Will your team actually change the way micro-transactions are handled in games? How do you think that would end up affecting the whole industry? Most players seem to think it would be a positive change. Do you disagree and can you give us a convincing reason why?
How do you respond to the allegations that banned user Mat is still the one behind your account?
Has the company suffered a noticeable amount of cancelled preorders/lost sales in the wake of this event? Essentially, are micro-transactions actually backfiring and losing net revenue because people just won’t buy the games anymore? How much longer do you think this can go on before you have a revolt on your hands and a massive flop of an otherwise good game, simply because people are sick of micro transactions?
How do you justify micro transactions? You’ve already paid for the game. Why should you have to pay more for loot boxes and characters? What happened to just unlocking it by getting good?
Probably the most beloved gaming company you’ll see online is CD Projeckt Red. What can you learn from their business model to improve your own? Will you consider how their PR strategy is working infinitely better than your own and consider how, in light of that, you could improve your own?
What is it like working for a company that so many people hate? Do you get crap from gamer cousins at Thanksgiving? How does the company as a whole seem to be reacting to this bad press?
What happened to single player gaming at EA? Is it just a matter of profit? Is profit really the only driving factor in making games, or does it just seem that way to an outside source? How do you plan on changing that perception if your company does care about the quality of their product beyond its ability to generate revenue?
What do you feel you have to contribute to the conversation? Is there anything you’d like to know from your playerbase that could help you make better games? Did your team even realize how deep the hate against EA went, or did it just seem like a passing internet fad?

If your PR team deems this acceptable, u/EACommunityTeam , I would love to hear from you. I’m guessing a few other downvoters would too.

Something that really makes me scratch me head is that when the radio here plays Nickelback (which they do 30% of the time, because Canada. :negative:), they bleep the word "drugs". And every single Nickelback song is about drugs.

They don't bother to cover it up with anything, they just leave a conspicuous hole in the song. So it's like "The girls come easy and the ___ come cheap." "We've all got a ___ dealer on speed dial."

If only they'd censor the rest of the song, too...

They are totally okay with the concept of businesses making money, not just when the "business gains X dollars" equates to "I have lose X dollars".

Plus, there's an underlying dissonance, because deep down they understand that their personal pet beef isn't going to become a thing that causes a game to fail. They'd love for it to happen, thus vindicating their position, but they know it won't.

Like, how long ago was it that some folks were furiously waiting for the day where DRM was going to make a mainstream game fail, because surely everyone thinks like them about it?

I'm not really sure what you mean with this, because that's just how transactions work. Their contention isn't that they have to spend money, it's that EA is "forcing" them to pay money to play as Darth Vader, or spend an inordinate amount of time playing the game. So the company either takes their money, or takes their time, to unlock a thing that they think they should have for free. I don't necessarily agree with what EA is doing, but it is absolutely people mad that EA wants to make money.

Then don't buy the fuckin' game. Boycott it as much as you want. But these people are threatening developers because of Star Wars, and at this point I hope EA doesn't cave and change the system because that'll be a real bad precedent.

I think they are OK with businesses making money in the theoretical, but not when they are the source of that money-making. Sorta like the cliché of a left-wing person being increasingly anti-tax when they are the ones taxed more.

As someone joked about above, if they did that they'd have to stick to that principle, and all the other stuff they want out of the game is ultimately worth more than that principle.

This is in Norway, outside of possibly a few specific instances, there are no school buses. There's just an arrangement between the schools and the local bus companies, and kids take the normal bus to/from school, usually with an extra route to match up with when school begins/ends.

And surprisingly few tragedies, though this will hopefully get people to talk about how to make it safer. ( -atleast for idiot kids who run over the road without looking. )
