Loot boxes are fine for aesthetic things and for people without addictive personality problems. I'm okay with stupid outfits or gun skins to come in that do nothing. They're a problem when they lock pay-to-win game content and for people who have addiction problems.

I have never bought Overwatch lootboxes because they are how lootboxes should work: meaningless pretty princess dress-me-up items with no effect on gameplay. Locking weapons or characters behind lootboxes sucks.

Holy poo poo. quote:In 1970, Deacon began to write his autobiography with three friends. Ernie Roberts (who also had cerebral palsy), had been in hospital since the age of ten and was able to understand Deacon's speech. Roberts listened to Deacon's dictation and repeated it to another patient, Michael Sangster, who wrote it down in longhand. After proof-reading by Chris Ring, a student who visited the team each week, it was typed by a fourth member of the team, Tom Blackburn, who was initially unable to read or write but taught himself to type in order to help.

Welp looks like the squeaky wheels got their grease https://www.ea.com/games/starwars/battlefront/battlefront-2/news/swbfii-changes-launch quote:So, we’re reducing the amount of credits needed to unlock the top heroes by 75%. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will now be available for 15,000 credits; Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa for 10,000 credits; and Iden at 5,000 credits. Based on what we’ve seen in the trial, this amount will make earning these heroes an achievement, but one that will be accessible for all players. Now they can continue to give EA their money with the smug belief that they, the customer, are right.

That reward is now 5,000 credits. A big change. What else is different? I need to find out. One thing I hope EA is addressing is Arcade rewards; after completing five challenges, I was alerted that I could no longer earn credits in this mode and that more would be available in 14 hours. "Yes we will reduce the cost of heroes by 75% and also some rewards by 75%" Bonus schad: EA will host an AMA on reddit on Wednesday.

Can you buy your way past it? I like reward schedule dampening where there’s no paid bypass (Destiny 2 has a good model) because it’s basically anti-poopsock design.

I believe all of the loot crates that people are up in arms about can be bought with real currency. One of the big issues is that the loot crates contain serious upgrades that can give you a major advantage, and stuff like Luke and Vader were gated behind so much in-game currency that you'd need to spend 40 hours of gameplay never spending a single credit in order to afford one of them. It's not just "Gamers are whiny because they don't get content for free". EA's method was actually making Battlefront 2 a pay-to-win game where people could just drop a bunch of cash and have an immediate advantage over everyone else.

Subjunctive posted:No, I meant the 14 hour reward lockout. I'm not sure, but I do know that you can always spend real money on premium currency (crystals) to purchase crates. So even if there's not a Farmville-style "Spend $20 to keep earning!" thing, there's still the incentive to spend more money. And since spending real money lets you get serious upgrades, anyone willing to throw money at EA can get an immediate advantage. War Thunder is a good example of doing microtransactions right. It groups you into specific matches depending on your vehicles so it's impossible for, say, a 1950s jet fighter to suddenly show up in a match full of 1930s biplanes and wreck everyone's poo poo. Premium vehicles are mostly reskinned and slightly different versions of existing vehicles that don't provide much or any upgrade over a basic model, so spending real money is more about bumping yourself up into higher ranks faster by speeding up research or getting new decals. EA has instead gone straight into pay-to-win where you either pay more money or you get stomped on.

Anyone who wants to ride a motorbike should watch the yearly "No Prisoners" compilation video. They are not for the faint of heart and people probably die in them. But you have to know how easily someone you had nothing to do with committing even a mild gently caress-up could cost you life or limb, let alone how bad one of your own gently caress-ups can end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpdZgypOPdA
