So John Darnielle recommended a record called "Triumph of Gloom" by Rebel Wizard as his #1 record this year, and it's pretty good. It's like a cross between power and black metal.

Other than being Czech there aren't really any similarities there. !T.O.O.H.! are pretty drat unique.

Probably a cop out but the preceding album to Order and Punishment is good too.

I think I'd say that Mincing Fury And Guttural Clamour Of Queer Decay is slightly similar to the weird dissonance of !T.O.O.H.!, but they err more on the side of brutal death metal and grind more than tech death.

Pyrrhon's What Passes for Survival really is very good, it's kind of weird at this point to hear a Gorguts-esque album sound fresh and exciting. I also listened to the Young and in the Way album someone posted recently today and that was pretty fun.

So I've been thinking about if Sabaton are nazis in the seizure-like Sabaton binge I've been on for the last two days( thanks, whoever recommended them!), and I gotta say, nearly everytime they refer to the political aspect of nazi Germany, they are pretty unequivocal about calling them evil assholes.

There is a really cringe-inducing song about the privates of the Wehrmacht, though, verses like "were they just young men who lost their way?" and the refrain is him belting "what about the men executing ooorders?" :eng99:

Touché. I guess I still think Luca is a bit more classic in their sound than the teenybopper sound of much of the newer stuff that was posted. Didn't mean to come off rude, fwiw

Not recent at all (well in theory they should have an album coming out sometime soonish) but do you listen to Kalmah? A lot of people describe them as super similar to COB but I'd go with "COB for adults" as a good description. (I love COB and I don't mean that as an insult.)

Need Oblivisicaris is really good live. They really sound like their albums and the clean vocalist really nails it.

The death vocalist is the creepiest dude ever and it works perfectly. A lot of the time his hair is over his whole face with his head tilted blasting out these growls with minimal effort. He's like this demon that has emerged from the sea and is the deep down disembodied dark side of the rest of the band members. He's tall, lanky, and pale with this sleeveless turtle neck leather vest thing. During the non death interludes he's just kneeling in front of the drums with his back to the crowd.

Allegaeon was a nice surprise. They were absolutely amazing and blew us all away. Fantastic stuff. We were all converted that night. Can't wait to see them again.
