The Capitals are in fact pretty bad right now and owe their place in the standings mostly to Holtby. They've done a great job at grabbing points when they deserve none, but that won't keep up forever. They need to either sharpen up a lot or they'll slowly fall out of the standings. They sit right around 25th in the Corsi stats, 28th in xGF%. The PK is bottom third and they take the 5th most penalties. They can't really blame luck; their PDO is 101.2 shooting 10%. The shot maps are a pretty good summary of the team's state. The wins have... not been pretty. https://twitter.com/IneffectiveMath/status/929905895873699840

The last season in Franchise I played in NHL 14 saw me do the real-life Hartnell/Umberger trade (I had to throw in Nick Schultz, which was also technically accurate since he wound up on the Flyers later). It ended up triggering a sequence of AI trades which (unintentionally) resulted in Pittsburgh going into Cap Hell and the computer buried a bunch of quality players (Neal, Letang, MAF) in WBS to compensate to the point where they were Crosby, Malkin, Maata, and a bunch of 55-65 skill guys. They went like 3-19-1 before I quit playing. Point is, I never thought it was possible for a team to be that bad in real life, yet here are the Coyotes.

Even the 74-75 Caps had a win and a draw in their first 4 games! Yeah, it took until game 76 to get their sole road win, their 7th overall...

Sports Club Stats had their odds of reaching the playoffs officially reach 0.0% today which is I believe the fastest anyone has ever cratered out like that.

I wonder what happens if they miss the playoffs? I mean Trotz will go, obviously, but what other changes can they do? The core of Ovi, Kuzy, Backstrom, Oshie, Niskanen, Orlov, Holtby isn't going anywhere.

I don't think he necessarily fleeced anyone with it but that Turris trade was real good for Nashville.

I've never gone to the ice with soakers on because literally every time I sit in the locker room with them on, someone is all "make sure you take those off!!" It's impossible for me to forget. (i tend to leave them on while getting dressed because rubber at rinks is always worn to poo poo with bits of metal or concrete poking through)

When I did speed skating, you usually put your skates on rink-side, because walking on them was a big no-no even on rubber.

raanta laid back to back turds against the jets but the coyotes sv% is way lower than raanta or wedgewood's individual sv%, so i'm not really worried about goalies right now

For hockey, we would just walk to the ice without skate guards (on rubber). I can’t remenber the last time I saw somebody get to the ice with their guards still on.

Yeah, but in speed skating it's more important that the skates stay perfectly sharp. I played hockey and speed skated growing up; while I never went onto the ice with my skates guards on playing hockey, one day on the walk between the dressing room and the rink I stepped on a piece of old face-up tape someone had dropped on the ground and didn't notice it, and as soon as I went to take a step with that foot I ate poo poo. Luckily at that point I was like sixteen and playing AA hockey so I didn't give any shits but if it was back in one of my first years I probably would have cried.
