That's the same tour where I first saw them. The lead singer even brought up a like, 10 year old kid, and gave him his sunglasses. It was adorable as hell.

And there was one guy in the crowd right up front who had flags for every country that Sabaton's war songs were based on. Like 7 songs into the set, the singer mentioned this and said he must be pretty familiar with their set list. He changed it on the spot, throwing in a song that they hadn't yet performed on that tour. The dude had a flag for it, and everyone went loving NUTS, including the singer.

Sweet I'll get tickets then. General admission is only $29, so that's a pretty fair price.

Kreator is also playing with them.

I try my best to avoid idolizing and “relating” to artists but good lord I’m so mentally tied to Devin at this point it’s ridiculous. I’m not even a long time fan or anything but he has shifted the way I approach musicianship and art in a very real way.

His fans are usually nice and goofy at worst. Like me. A goofy dumb nerd. What point am I trying to prove again?

his non-SYL material really isn’t that great though

Oct 10, 2004

I love most of his non SYL stuff, from Ocean Machine to Casualties of Cool he only released a couple of bad albums IMO. Since then he's been pretty mediocre though. In fact, I'd say a lot of it is better than SYL (with the exception of City and maybe Alien)

Ocean Machine and Terria are great albums, there’s barely a bad song on either. A lot of his other stuff is only okay though. The monkey cheese humor was cute when I was a teenager but now I mostly find it offputting. The DTP stuff is maybe half good and half what the gently caress am I listening to. I respect that he is willing to step outside of genre confines and make non-metal music but uh, I gotta say he’s not great at it.

I actually thought Transcendence wasn’t bad. Felt very much like a middle aged man trying to be hardcore but what can you do.

Yeah I'm not really into most of the humour but I love the music so I can just ignore it. It's only really prevelant on Deconstruction, which is more than good enough to excuse it, and the Ziltoid albums anyway.

Time to post something that's been kicking around in my head for a while: You know what's a sick loving riff? That one riff from Green Cave Float by Darkthrone!! You know the one I'm talking about, and if you don't you should be thoroughly patronized for your obviously not-listening-to-everything-Fenriz-has-ever-crapped-out behavior.

Here's its first appearance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHZRHoYvG5U&t=97s

And here it is with Fenriz warbling in falsetto over it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHZRHoYvG5U&t=211s

If I had any musical talent at all I would start an epic doom metal band and just rip that riff off in every song. I'm sure Fenriz would approve. In fact he did approve of Vastum ripping of like the first two thirds of the riff here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dDSt1hDIcY&t=289s

Here's him playing this song on Radio Fenriz https://soundcloud.com/heavytassen/radio-fenriz-14-2015-2016

Anyway, this concludes my post about exactly one riff. Feel free to join me next time for the other post that I'm keeping for a rainy day, where I talk about how songs that start with single snare hits loving rule!!! See ya

Transcendence has some really good stuff on it. I generally like all of his DTP stuff, although there are albums I like better than others. His SYL work, City especially is still pretty great.

Z2 is a real mixed bag, there's some good tracks on the "Sky Blue" side and some good tracks of the Ziltoid side, but neither album really comes together as its own thing.

Speaking of Darkthrone, am I the only person who actually really enjoys the vocals on Panzerfaust? Because I know, objectively, they're terrible, but they fit the music so well.

Edit: Does that sound like I'm calling Panzerfaust terrible? That's not what I meant, dodgy nazi associations aside it's one of my favourite Darkthrone albums.

The vocals on Panzerfaust rip. Probably my favorite performance from Nocturno Culto. I like it when black metal vocalists sound like they're having a meltdown / loving up their vocal cords and enjoying it

Here's my favorite non-Panzerfaust example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEsoMT_MYzo

The whole song is good but those last couple vocal lines in particular (starting at 4:20) just sound like the guy never wants to be able to talk again. 4:48 and onwards always gives me goosebumps

Speaking of riffs that just absolutely crush, I still can't get over how dark, evil, and heavy the segment of this Adversarial track is starting at 4:10. The last nearly 2 minutes of it are almost orgasmic in what it does to me.

For some reason the drat time stamp isn't working for me so you can just fast forward to that portion.

I'm a very big fan of when songs start off with a skank beat followed by some bass lines before everything starts going off the rails.
