you can call it whatever ideological label you want. it's completely immaterial to what i'm talking about. my point that they are undemocratic dictatorships still stands. you are disingenuously conflating the idea of democratically run businesses with autocratic dictatorships.

capitalists have created private tyrannies that control your life. killing the public state is exactly what they want as a class because it gives them much more control over society and gives you much less control.

What happens if some businesses and employees within them don't want to be 'democratically run'? If evil Globomegacop pays 10% more than nice communal huggy co-op, then simple economics should indicate that the former is going to be better off. That's going to be far more attractive to many people than some nebulous idea of employee control.

If your answer is 'we'll make a law!', then you'll need a state powerful enough to enforce the effective removal of property rights and we all know how that one ends. Your new, now heavily-regulated economy also still has to compete with other countries that don't do this.

Good that they worked this gem in for perspective:

Worker coops don't require a state mandate that all businesses are ran as worker coops. You can have the traditional corporation and worker coops in the same economy. The government can enact policies to encourage a worker coop sector of the economy.

The appeal of such an institution is that workers become their own boss. Workers should only voluntarily enter into this arrangement.

A great example is Jeremy Corbyn's proposal for the Right of First Refusal. If a corporation wants to sell or move their workplace out of the country, the workers themselves should be able to buy the workplace from the capitalist. The government or a private bank can lend them the money.

In the US, capitalists are so hostile to the idea that they won't even sell a workplace to the workers even if they themselves have the capital. Massachusetts recently had an example of offshoring where the union wanted to buy the workplace since they were leaving and the capitalist refused on ideological grounds.

large corporations are essentially a form of government. this form of government is autocratic. in practice, the corporation is a tyranny and not a benevolent dictatorship.

you get rid of the us public government and you are left with private tyrannies that are even more unaccountable to you.

a much better solution is to end the forces that cause the public government to be undemocratic in the first place. extreme inequality allows the wealthy to buy the government. the extreme inequality is caused by enabling a tiny minority to make the important economic decisions for everyone else at the workplace, including how to allocate the revenue of the enterprise. workplaces do not have to be this way. workplaces can be made democratic and owned by the workers. make the workplace democratic, and the workers will not vote to give obscene wealth to a handful of employees and owners while they can't send their kids to college.
Private tyrannies are a lesser evil by virtue of the fact that their abuses lack the imprimatur of law, they aren't the only game in town, and force isn't part of their arsenal. Anecdotally, I've found companies much more responsive to my concerns than the government has ever been, and when they haven't been responsive, they either have a chartered monopoly from a government, or simply lose my business. There's a world of difference between competing for my dollar, and feeling entitled to it. For what it's worth, I support dismantling America's archaic laws regarding workplace organization and needlessly adversarial structures for resolving labor disputes. I think we could benefit from aspects of the German cooperative model, but it's easier to get a small group of rich people organized to establish a company than it is to get a large group of poor people organized to do the same.

World War Mammories posted:

but historical evidence and simple logic demonstrates that if you let capitalists run free in such a system, without anything keeping them in check, they're gonna do their damnedest to rig the game in their favor, because that will help them make more money. the profit motive explicitly contradicts your stated goals of governance. you keep approaching good ideas and I'm pretty sure we broadly agree but then you trail off when the obvious conclusion of "these ideas are incompatible with capitalism" gets hard to ignore
Natural monopolies are one of the most overstated bugaboos in political discourse, and much of the "traditional" academic American historiography was duplicitously self-serving in its characterization of periods like the Roaring Twenties or the Gilded Age. That is to say, the plagiarist engineers of the New Deal were not reliable raconteurs of the preceding eras, and their record of decades of dismal stagnation speaks for itself to anyone wise enough to listen. The overwhelming majority of monopolies and their associated abuses occur under the auspices of government, but I'm not averse to some form of state-owned utilities to handle natural monopolies. It would be essential to guard against state attempts to legislatively or administratively freeze out potential competitors, and also to safeguard consumers against exploitative practices, but I don't see how that would be incompatible with anything I've advocated.

Here's a lol:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/19/us/jones-alabama-democrats.html

quote:

Mr. Moore, long a controversial and polarizing figure, stands accused of molesting or making unwanted advances toward numerous young women and girls, one as young as 14, when he was in his 30s. That has rendered him radioactive for national Republicans and led The Birmingham News to bellow on Sunday’s front page: “Stand for Decency, Reject Roy Moore.”

And the Democratic candidate, Mr. Jones, is a respected former prosecutor best known for convicting two Ku Klux Klan members for the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, who was raising the possibility of a truly competitive race even before the accusations against Mr. Moore.

“The Democratic Party is not behind him pushing him up the hill to victory, because they don’t have a wagon for him to ride in right now,” said Mark Kennedy, a former state Supreme Court justice and erstwhile chairman of the Democratic Party. “He’s got to do it all by himself.”
