Zeitgeist was legitimately good. His stuff with the Viridian Green movement was an interesting document of the time. He’s not a preturnatually-gifted writer like Gibson, but he’s is certainly a class above the Doctorow/Klein poo poo-tier that seems to be dominating the genre now.

i think he walked back the idea a few years ago (it was apparently based on slashdot voting so lol at that) but in the story its also mercurial and fleeting based on being a crowd pleaser so idk seems more cautionary in the abstract. im pretty sure the story is never so self-aware as to reach that conclusion but its there if youre pessimistic

Half bug, half machine, all cyborg

Singapore research produces biologic-electronic hybrid.

quote:

Meet the Cyborginsect: the smallest living robot ever made.

Developed by a team from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and described in a paper in the journal Soft Robotics, the Cyborginsect is a true combination of interlinked biological and electronic systems.

Lead author Vo Doan Tat Thang explains that the biological part of the robo-bug is a darkling beetle (Zophobas morio). It is attached to a miniature wireless backpack, with electrodes implanted into its antennae.

By sending electrical pulses through the antennae Thang and his colleagues are able control when, where and how the insect moves. It is capable of precise, graded responses, which include walking backwards.

“The flexibility provided by employing the insect's own muscular system and joints helps the cyborg insect to easily adapt to any unfamiliar terrains,” explains Thang.

Weighing only one gram, the cyborginsect could one day be deployed in a wide range of surveillance and monitoring tasks.

“In contrast to the traditional legged robots,” the team concludes in its paper, “this robot is of low cost, easy to construct, simple to control, and has ultra-low power consumption.”

The Department of Justice on Tuesday charged an Iranian national with allegedly hacking into HBO, dumping a selection stolen files, and attempting to extort the company by ransoming a treasure trove of the company’s content. This summer, hackers released a bevy of internal HBO files, included scripts for Game of Thrones and full, unaired episodes of other shows.

Behzad Mesri, aka “Skote Vahshat”, at one point worked for the Iranian military to break into military and nuclear systems, as well as Israeli infrastructure, according to the newly released complaint. Under his Vahshat pseudonym, Mesri also defaced hundreds of websites in the U.S. and around the world, the complaint adds.

[...]

Mesri allegedly tried to pry $6 million from HBO in the digital currency bitcoin. As The Daily Beast reported during the extortion effort in August, an HBO employee offered the hacker $250,000, although that was likely to be an effort to stall the hacker. Mesri also pinched financial documents and login details for HBO’s social media accounts, the complaint reads.
