I think the new blade runner movie showed that filming poo poo with miniatures still looks much better than purely cgi stuff.

TIE fighters are rather tall, but much less massive, and not as long or wide as the falcon. The Falcon is rather small.

Ive always thought of them as small too. But from the first movie they have always been as big as an x-wing. Theres one chasing the other that they are the same size. Things are big.

Amazing how well good practical effects hold up. Looks more real than 99% of the prequels.

Naturally both practical and CGI effects look brilliant when done well, but I'd say CGI ages worse than practical effects overall, especially if its low budget CGI vs low budget practical. I think there was this period around the turn of the century where everyone was losing their minds and going crazy over all the various things you can do with CGI, except a decade or two later it all looks loving awful. The most well known example are the Star Wars special edition changes, but everyone was getting in on the action, even the BBC.

Around this period they were "remastering" old effects in Red Dwarf, replacing the quite detailed model work with loving awful CGI. It was quietly scrapped three seasons in. Around the same period, they started releasing classic Doctor Who on DVD and replacing very very low budget practical effects with CGI. Even when the CGI was actually of a decent standard, it just looked so out of place with everything else it ended up looking awful anyway. Mercifully all such additions were an option you had to enable. I'll find some examples, but in the mean time have some gifs of probably the most technically impressive part of the film.

To elaborate, the human eye is remarkably good at picking up on "how things are supposed to look." Especially with regards to light. Practical effects tend to hold up better because, by nature of being physical things that were shot on film, the light reflecting off models is going to be much closer, if not indistinguishable from the lighting on the actors. This is also why Cyborg in the new Justice League movie, and Superman's cape in his last two movies, look so awful. The movies were filmed on 35mm film, rather than digital video. (Aside: I know there are conversations about lighting, film stock, and stage makeup as it relates to recording people of color. I'm WAY not qualified to comment on that, but I didn't want it to go unmentioned.) So when the shots get composited, the cg animation isn't at the same resolution as the people it's butting up against.

So in a sense its the uncanny valley, but in relation to lighting?

I don't think its much of a valley. If superman's cape looked like it was from a cartoon, it would look super out of place. The CGI version just looks somewhat out of place.

I frankly despise CGI and what its done to movies. They've looked consistently lovely since forever and yet somehow the only lesson learned is to use more CGI.

CGI is a good tool when used sparingly. Look at Fury road. Used a bunch of CGI but mainly did it to do things like hide safety equipment

This times a million. CGI can be used to incredibly effective ends (almost always while working hand in hand with practical effects), but the more successful the execution the more likely it'll never be recognized as CGI. You remember the bad stuff, you don't remember the good stuff because you never realized it was CGI in the first place.
