Armitage III just turned up on Crunchyroll, would that work?

Caveat with dubbed Armitage III; Make sure it's the 4-episode OVA and not the movie version.

Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust?

Ninja Scroll? Some boobies in that one, iirc.

Madox-01 is nothing special, but has nice mechanical detail.

I binged on a bunch of 80/90s ovas two years ago--there's a tonne just on YouTube--unfortunately I'm bad at remembering names and titles.

Anybody remember an anime film taking place on a desert planet, with giant sandborne battlecruisers? There's some kind of weird conspiracy that involves people involuntarily(?) spying on military personnel---I think aliens were involved. The finale has robosuits, flying saucers and some sort of time ticking bomb, iirc. That was an example of a dumb* but fun and watchable 90s anime movie.

I wanted to say it was Venus Wars but that's not it.

Are there any anime (or live action movies) similar to the game series Yakuza? And general Japanese crime dramas I guess can fit. I haven't watched the Miike film based directly on the game yet because I heard not so great things, so if anyone wants to go to bat for that please do.

NANI?

Not anime but a good amount of the manga that Ryoichi Ikegami has worked on have been yakuza/crime stuff esp. Crying Freeman, Sanctuary and Strain. Crying Freeman has an early 90's OAV based on it which starts off fairly strong but gets more ridiculous and poorly animated as it goes on.

Also while it's not yakuza or crime-y you could try Fist of the Northstar which was obviously a huge influence on Kiryu's character when they were making the original game. All the animated versions are either pretty old or incomplete for that though.

Maybe 91 Days? It's more an anime take on an American mob story, and the production is a bit rough in spots, but it's quite good regardless.

emblem take 2 is the best you are going to get anime wise. 2 episode ova about an incompetent yakuza who gets the chance to start his career again through what would nowadays be an isekai plot. outside of that you have tokyo tribe (theres a better live action movie though), which isn't very good and various series which just use the yakuza for background joke fodder

there are a whole lot of yakuza live action movies out there though, some i suggest checking out are the battles without honor or humanity series, sonatine (and other takeshi kitanos), oh and miike has done a ton of yakuza movies but i feel like you know that already

Hello anime folks, please recommend me an anime about fighting (no real preference between shonen and shojo) with a major female villain who's cool as hell and not defined by being threateningly horny. Like it's even okay if she's threateningly horny at times, so long as she has other real interesting stuff going on

i kind of want to recommend Mirai Nikki, but it might not be quite what you're looking for since Yuno basically constantly bounces between "major villain" and "secondary protagonist" and is also a yandere (though a way more believable and well-rounded example of the archetype than most)

regardless she's a major female villain for at least part of the show and fuckin rules so it might be up your alley

it handles its side cast infinitely better than a lot of shonen mecha shows and does a lot to flesh them all out but it's still ultimately a show where gainer finds a way to beat up the robot of the week so if that's not your thing then yeah you might wanna just drop it

If you’re open to movies, consider Anthem of the Heart, which is also done by the Anohana staff (and is also more effective than Anohana, imo). Colorful is another teenage drama movie, but a very different flavor, and has more of a persistent atmosphere of misery throughout the whole film. Its cast also has very few if any roles in other anime, so it will probably sound pretty distinct from what you’re used to hearing.
