also i guess most of my disdain for dbz comes from people using the word vegeta improperly, it's a kind of spice mix, not a god drat cartoon character

Not schmaltzy feel-good platitudes. Real, practical, grown man poo poo.

ok my point wasn't that mewtwo hates toxic ppl (preach queen) it's that you can say a cartoon has good messages or whatever which is fine and true for kids but they are incredibly obvious and self-evident like "be good to your pals" and "believe in yourself" so I have no idea why adults point to this as a merit unless they're saying "that's why i have my kiddos watch them". Every now and then I'll see this on some social media site and people will post about how surprisingly deep it is for a kid's movie. Or just the quote itself and "bett you thought this was al einstein nop pals it's the mewster rekt!" and it's like yeah no duh because it's a pretty good message that's still quite easy for a kid to understand. Anyways cartoons are good but "it has a good message" is usually pretty loving dumb as a point.

Didn't Vic straight up murder an innocent person in the very first episode in order to cover his rear end?

If I'd been told it was Tales From the Crypt, I think I'd be less opposed to it. It just really ended up bothering me that someone's takeaway from The Twilight Zone was Black Mirror.

It's been a while since I saw any The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits episodes, but IIRC Black Mirror is a lot more mundane. "What if terrorists forced the prime minister to gently caress a pig on live TV", instead of "what if Merlin took you on a magic trip to Stonehenge".

Black Mirror episodes are all focused on the impact of technology and the media; there's a reason "what if phones but too much" was used to describe the series.

lemon-lyme disease posted:… The tone is so completely, completely different that I'm not sure how anyone thinks to compare 'em. Black Mirror's very much a sci-fi Tales From the Crypt. I was thinking about this after my initial post. Despite its camp and cheap effects, I really, really love Twilight Zone because it does sci-fi with a heavy emphasis on the worth of humanity and emotion. It often had a gentle touch but when it ended in loss, it wasn't just a mean twist: It was a tragedy. It was made with a romance that considers worth of a single soul beyond measure. And unfortunately, that's a dated idea. Black Mirror is moreso a Tales From the Crypt in that it kinda revels in cruelty. It loves punishing its characters, it loves making things worse, it loves telling you that mankind at its core is obscene, hateful, ugly and hopeless. And that'd be fine if that was what I was set up to expect. It can be fun to see awful people eat poo poo! But when I think "Twilight Zone," I think of a something that believes and values the good in people and Black Mirror abso-loving-lutely doesn't do that. And yeah, Twilight Zone had that episode about scientists overseeing a man's breakdown in the face of absolute solitude; Black Mirror's take was "reality show punishment game!"

Black Mirror generally (but certainly not always) has protagonists pushed beyond their limits by systemic forces or by actions done in moments of weakness spiralling out of control. There are only a handful of stories where you're watching a bad person suffer and those invariably raise questions about proportionality and justice because of how cruel they end up being. I'm trying to be vague because I think overall it's a great show and spoilers drastically affect how you watch some of the stories. For more thread content: Chris Pratt is one of the many things dragging down Guardians of the Galaxy and his character in Jurassic Park is one of the best ever examples of a Mary Sue. He should stick to roles like Parks & Rec and the LEGO Movie. Doctor Spaceman has a new favorite as of 11:21 on Nov 26, 2017 |

It's really not Twilight Zone or tales from the Crypt. it's it's own thing and thats good. Both of those shows are the easiest comparison though.

That's pretty a stupid assessment of it. Barring that it is not even applicable to a decent chunk of the episodes, why does a show being bleak automatically make it bad?

Trump is bad because his policies are bad, not because of the way he acts. I mean, he's a dumbass who constantly does stupid poo poo, but way too many people are upset that he's mean, or rude, instead of being mad at what he's being rude/mean about. I think a strong pro-government Leftist that's really really good at bullying would own.
