Looking for some anime recommendations from 2010 to now or so!

To make it more specific as per the op, I'm not currently looking for slice of life stuff, stuff about kids/in a school setting, etc. I guess that leaves dramas that are eventful, thrillers, fight things, comedies, action adventure, and whatnot. Pretty much, looking for cool stuff up my alley I might be missing out on, since I haven't been keeping up with anime as much in recent years.

One Piece, Kaiji, Jojo, Ippo Rising, One Punch Man, Lupin, and Rainbow are some I've enjoyed during this time period. I'll try Academia sometime, trying that Fate/Zero show next. I love the oldschool stuff mentioned in this thread by the way.

You might get a kick out of rage of bagamut - genesis. It's a classic fantasy action-adventure with a great look and fluid animation. It's swashbuckly and light-hearted: has a bit of the princess bride to it. Don't watch the sequel.

Seconding these four shows especially, although only Mob Psycho falls under the fight things/action category (but it's mostly a comedy).

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju and March comes in like a Lion are excellent dramas. ACCA is . . . wait what even is ACCA's genre? It's like the most laid-back and pretty political thriller ever made I guess. A fun watch.

Pretty much the entire point of Madoka is that it subverts literally all of your expectations about what it's going to be. It's not at all a slice of life magical girl show, or whatever. The fact that they're in school at all is only ever relevant like twice, and then only for establishing how characters meet each other.

It's the show that like no other made me realize that despite pretenses of maturity and poignancy (with music to back it up!), anime is often sophomoric melodrama. It was like the 4th or 5th anime series I saw.

I know about the show and that it's dark and whatnot, haven't been living under a rock. It's just funny that you can't ask for recommendations without being told to watch Madoka, since my criteria there was pretty much ruling out Madoka. It's a show about kids being tormented, in some part, or a dark drama starring kids, I understand it'll be thrilling and inspiring by the end but it's not what I'm asking for. Why have individual taste and a topic to recommend stuff tailored to people's tastes if everyone has to watch Madoka?

I'm gonna try Fate/Zero coincidentally, which is by the same writer (sorta, since also collaborating), so hopefully that'll do! Tim Curry's funny response to RHPS fans is the tone I'm trying to get across here, you Madoka fans are relentless.

Another show not mentioned is The Third: The Girl With the Blue Eye. It seems like pretty standard, wholesome light-novel stuff, with a not-so-great localization (maybe the source material isn't fantastic). But it's got a cool tank. I love tanks in deserts*. I actually find the characters endearing despite their cliches, and despite the oh-so-unnecessary corny narration. I'm enjoying it so far.

Drinking Game: get a nuclear engineer to watch Coppelion. Every time they facepalm and/or give up on humanity, take a shot.

Normally I'd give soft-scifi a DGAF waiver on the superhuman ignorance about medicine and radiation on account of artistic license or drama or whatnot... except in a show about hazmat workers in an enchanted nuclear waste dump where even the basic laws of chemistry/physics don't apply, which consistently contradicts its own arbitrary rules every five minutes.

"That is not how breathing works!"

"Behold! A B-2 stealth bomber cargo plane that thinks it's an attack helicopter!"

While I'm grateful for there being zero shower scenes, making "magical instantaneous decontamination" a free action invalidates the whole premise by the middle of the first episode.

It's a crying shame how Il Teatrino turned out. They had really good source material to work with, too. And the worst part is that it probably killed any chance of a continuation, and there were still so many prime gut-punches left.

Madoka is not what they asked for or should be recommended given their request. People who continue to say “bbut” are fundamentally missing the point.

Also it’s been out for many years and is not as surprising or shocking just for being itself anymore. Having watched it again very recently, at base it’s a show with young girls who have bad things happen them, and if you have no interest in a) explorations of the magical girl genre or b) “dark” mean things happening to children, it’s the wrong suggestion.

I actively avoided seeing Madoka for years because I thought it was "dark mean things happening to children" and I thought it was just going to make me mad, but then it became my favorite show overnight, so YMMV. It has a lot of heart to it and isn't mean-spirited in the way that a lot of the shows it inspired decided to be.

Anyway, vaguely related but moving on: Psycho-Pass and Gargantia are both super good and impactful and also have Gen Urobuchi involvement. I just finished rewatching Gargantia with some friends, the middle slumps a bit but it's a fantastic show with a really interesting world and a good as heck climax.

If you watch Psycho-Pass, avoid season 2 (different writer who totally missed the point and made meanspirited goreporn out of it).

edit: Princess Principal is fun and super stylish, if lesbian spies in steampunk world with a Yuki Kajiura soundtrack sounds appealing to you

Psycho-Pass season 2 is watchable and decent to a point. A very specific point, and beyond that the season gets unsalvageably stupid. Specifically when Sakuya Togane gets his backstory revealed and he goes full-blown Oedipal towards Sybil-Mom. There's credit to be given to the main antagonist actually being interesting in how he's achieving his goals, especially as you can see how the bits of his plan are meant to fit together. The drug treatments to beat a Hue-check make sense if you assume they're muscle relaxants and lithium, and you can understand what each incident is meant to achieve in helping Kirito Kamui learn how the Dominators work.

That said, you should really just skip season 2 and go right to the movie after season 1. It has the original director back and ignores season 2 completely. It's also really good.
