I checked, and it was the house bill that turbo fucks universities and people with student loans. But those people tend to vote against Republicans anyway so expect it to be in the final draft.

Something interesting about this tax cut nonsense is that something very, very close to this would've still been done with a President Rubio. The whole thing has very, very little to do with Trump, since he doesn't know anything, and almost everything to do with Republicans just being regular shitbags. It's refreshing!

Well, refreshing in that he's so astoundingly incompetent that all he does is say the quiet part loud all day every day. It's the same poo poo as it would have been but the monkey's paw wish means the 'I'm not racist you're the REAL racist' mask has been ripped off. Just turns out a third of the country likes what they see and want more.

Whelp, just dropped some cash to get those fucks out of Congress. Heard from a former GOP House staffer friend earlier in the week that the general attitude on the Hill is "we shut down the government and got reelected for it, noone's going to care, Dems never turn out in midterms in my district/state anyways." Even he thought it was insane to ram such a garbage bill through while totally forgetting how they took back control of Congress on the back of an unpopular bill just 7 loving years ago. Going to interesting to see what the blowback on Collins is going to be, she's been riding on her 'principled moderate' horse for a while but voting for this is going to erase all the goodwill she had with the left.

Here's a novel idea: instead of worrying so much about which demographics we specifically want to gently caress over or give a break to, how about we reduce spending? We could slash a lot of budgets if we gave them any real scrutiny with that "fraud, waste, and abuse" thing. CRAZY IDEA, I KNOW RITE

Donald Tusk: EU will back Ireland’s Brexit progress decisionquote:In a bluntly worded warning to London and a show of unity with Dublin, European Council President Donald Tusk said Friday that Ireland would have an absolute veto over the declaration of “sufficient progress” in the Brexit negotiations. Brexit continues on being the greatest tragicomedy in recent European history.

Dumb move by the White House. The final bill still has to pass the Senate again after it's been reconciled.

Give to/volunteer at local level rather than National, it'll still help the up ticket races while impacting the ground level offices that actually matter.

psydude posted:If/when Democrats retake Congress and the presidency in 2018/2020 I really hope they keep the current middle class tax cuts and then raise the poo poo out of taxes on the rich. First off, they might take the House. They'll gently caress up every other election. Second, the "middle class tax cuts" are actually tax hikes hidden behind a doubled standard deduction (from ~6k to 12k). Which works out to less than that, because it removes the personal deduction (~4k) you used to claim alongside that standard deduction. So yeah they doubled it. And cut the second part, so the normal claim for a single person just went from 10k to 12k. And if you itemized your deductions, to claim things like mortgage interest, student loan interest, state/local taxes, etc, you're hosed. You used to get the 4k personal deduction even if you itemized. So there go the single largest items you got to claim, and that deduction.

The best part is much like the bush tax cuts when this thing expires after 10 years what's permanent is tax hikes on almost everyone and tax cuts on the ultra rich and corporations. They'll bitch again about Democrats letting taxes rise but this time they made the worst parts permanent so it requires actual action to get rid of the effects (rather than just letting it expire like parts of the bush tax cuts).

Pretty much every federal agency has faced mounting budget cuts for the last 7 or so years, many of them are cut to the bone and haven't been adequately hiring for years. The IRS for example has had its budget cut way past the point of being able to reasonably enforce tax law, for a while now the IRS budget cuts have been costing us money in the name of fiscal responsibility.
