For people who claim to be sola scriptura, American Protestants sure love to go on about the uniquely sacred nature of Jerusalem and how it must be both Christian and Jewish and one day those Jews'll just realize the truth. Like, ain't none of that bullshit in the actual Bible. I know because I've actually read the thing.

Like, more value given to education, tradition, philosophy, and good moral conduct. this. My family is UCC but most of my family is catholic or some kinda Episcopalian. i dont really believe in anything per say, more agnostic then atheist(id like to believe there is god and some sort of peaceful afterlife) but after reading a ton and taking a college class on reformation taught by cool and good teacher. i kinda of agree with the Catholics more at least theologically. Sola fide, sola scriptura are dumb in my opinion because its based luther weird axieties and feels like a massive cop-out to being a good person and is treated like trickle down morality at best. i am surprised we dont have a religion thread on c-spam.

Yes, the current crop of evangelicals and baptists are batshit crazy, but there are also much more decent Protestant sects like Unitarians or Quakers. The past 100 years or so have dramatically cut down on the anti-authoritarian streak of Protestantism, while the Catholic church has gone through a series of reforms designed to make the church less rigid, and there have been some small steps made to increase local authority.

Oh for sure. I’m just bummed out that the more sane and ethical branches of Protestantism didn’t retain as much influence in America. I mean, Protestants were the core of abolitionism. It’s ultimately historical reasons that caused the corrupt lunatics to take over the public voice of Christianity in the U.S., not because of an inherent doctrinal problem. So I don’t mean to throw all of Protestantism under the bus. I have a soft spot for the Anabaptist traditions too. And the Mormons. I JUST LOVE ALL RELIGIONS OK

TBH I'm an atheist but I did always find the Greco-Roman pantheon to be by far the most compelling religion, in terms of explaining the world. You never really have to worry about the question of why evil exists when you think your dieties are a bunch of drunken inbred morons who spend all their time trying to gently caress or screw each other over, and the only time they even pay attention to humanity is when they either want to mess with us, or when we do something to piss them off.

Well it was 1 a.m. at the apartment complex where I used to live when I looked out the window and there was a three-foot-tall torch flame going on a balcony across the way. I thought an overloaded ashtray had lit up and was about to burn the building down. So I go over there and tap on the door and this middle-aged Persian dude opens the door and I get hit with a wall of incense. I tell him what's up and he shows me this super fancy torch-lamp setup and I figure this must be a religious thing so I politely excuse myself. Also I looked it up and it was a Zoroastrian holiday but yeah I'm still not totally sure though
