Matt Bruenig had a tweet a while a back where he basically said that liberals wringing their hands over how "rushed" the GOP tax bill were missing the point entirely - there's nothing inherently wrong about passing a bill in a week or whatever, as long as the content is good.

I'm going off of wikipedia here, but the PPACA was introduced as HR 3590 on Sep-17-2009, passed the House on Nov-07-2009, passed the Senate on Dec-24-2009, and signed by Obama on Mar-23-2010. That's 185 days.

The VRA took 142 days. Social Security took 131 days. The Militia Act of 1862 took nine days from being introduced in the Senate to getting signed by Lincoln. There was even an emergency banking act during FDR's time that made it through the House, the Senate, and was signed by the President in one day.

The democratic opposition to the bill isn't the content, it's that it wasn't done politely. That's the party in a nutshell: they want the same loving terrible poor-crushing neoliberal hell poo poo the republicans do, but they want to be nice about it. They've gotten pulled so far to the right trying to be bipartisan that their identity has become republicans who say "please."

Hillary's bullshit about branding was pretty prescient, except the democrats haven't had a brand since they were the segregationists. The republicans have successfully sold themselves as the party of patriotism, freedom, the troops, and individual liberty, despite consistently promoting an agenda in direct opposition to those values for seventy consecutive years. The democrats have no brand, and that's why they have no broad-based wins anywhere on the horizon. Individual democrats may win in places that want a little more civility in their capitalist destruction, but there won't be another wave no matter how popular until this party is able to cultivate and sell a message that isn't just "you guys liked Obama and he was one of us."

Remember back during the convention when the Dems had plastered American Flags everywhere and veneration of the Troops and everyone on the Left said it looked more like the Republican Convention than a Democratic one, and all the BadDem defenders said that it was a good thing because the Democrats needed to retake Nationalism and Patriotism from the Republicans. That's their idea of branding, just being Republican-lite

That's not really true, though they did have several months. The great bulk of the time from 2009-2011 was spent just short of a filibuster-proof majority. Whether they would have done better with more time is up for debate.
Bullshit

They could have just canceled automatic filibuster, though. It's the Senate, they can upend whatever they want.
The Senate makes the rules of the Senate. They could have canceled the automatic filibuster and make Republicans (and Joe Lieberman) stand there with a piss bucket. They could have changed it to 59, or 58, or whatever number of votes instead of 60. They could have done hundreds of different things to pass any goddamn legislation they wanted.

But guess what? They didn't want to. Bad dems don't want to pass good legislation.

Despite their best efforts, I do think democrats will pick up just enough seats in 18 to appease their donors and have a grand circle jerk at dnc headquarters. They will still be garbage tho with respect to policy

Obama probably could've passed just about anything he wanted in early 2009 if he'd been willing to push for it

forget about vote counts and filibusters for a moment and think back to the halcyon days of Obamarama. it was the height of a recession so big it had its own special name, and the average newspaper headline at the time was basically "have the banks caused an complete and permanent collapse of the American economy, or have they merely sparked a second Great Depression?" meanwhile, the newly-elected president was a notoriously charismatic speaker who had trounced his opponent by ten million loving votes and almost completely dominated both houses of Congress. if Obama had been willing to play hardball and use the bully pulpit, there's no way the GOP could have maintained the iron discipline they'd need for a filibuster - especially back in the 2008-2010 era when the Tea Party wasn't a thing yet

instead, he declared from the beginning that he was looking to make a deal, and never showed any interest in calling GOP bluffs

In 2018 we're going to have a house candidate debate his uncle for a house seat vacated by their disgraced father/great uncle.
We were right to elect Trump, burn the store down and start over.
