Yeah, that's true, as well. I'm really curious what would cause that much of a drop in Evangelical support - especially with his attack on the Johnson Amendment.

Doesn't matter for NC - the governor gets to appoint, but he must appoint someone from the same party as the resigning Senator. Cooper would simply appoint the least-bad Republican he could find.

You can appoint anyone though right? Why not just have a Dem switch to GOP, appoint him/her and then have them switch back?

You know it's what the Republicans would do if they had a chance.

Another term would be "thousand-yard stare" but in order to have such a stare, you need to have your innocence ripped from your arms, shot in the head, and buried in front of you.

Shucks was born without innocence.

Do it and then the Senate is either down 1 Republican or up 1 Democrat. By the time the lawsuits are settled it's months/years from now. You win either way.

I mean the correct thing to do is not allow the Governor to appoint anyone and just leave the seat empty but well :effort:

edit: Now that I think of it, couldn't the Governor of NC do exactly that? Leave the seat open and refuse to appoint anyone? Or is he/she required to appoint someone?

I had a sudden fit of decorum, you're right.

quote:

§ 163-12. Filling vacancy in United States Senate.
Whenever there shall be a vacancy in the office of United States Senator from this State,
whether caused by death, resignation, or otherwise than by expiration of term, the Governor shall
appoint to fill the vacancy until an election shall be held to fill the office. If the Senator was
elected as the nominee of a political party, the person appointed by the Governor shall be a
person affiliated with that same political party. The Governor shall issue a writ for the election of
a Senator to be held at the time of the first election for members of the General Assembly that is
held more than 60 days after the vacancy occurs. The person elected shall hold the office for the
remainder of the unexpired term. The election shall take effect from the date of the canvassing of
the returns.

Huh - there's an interesting loophole. Technically, Roy Cooper could nominate forums user "theflyingorc" to the US Senate if I'm reading this correctly, because I have never been the nominee of a political party. But anyone who has been nominated by a party previously appears to be "locked" to that party.

In theory that doesn't matter, because few serious candidates will be people who have never been a nominee for anything. But he COULD technically nominate my friend who lost the NC Senate Primary last year.

edit: durrrr I read everything completely wrong like a moron. It doesn't look like they control for "affiliation"
