South Africa didn't get the 2.8 Cologne, they had the old 3.0 Essex instead, which is a bloody solid lump, but not the last word in output. The 2.3 turbo from the XR4Ti was kind of just a US thing, that car getting the 2.8 "originally", and the Cosworths were something else entirely compared to the generic Sierra, you couldn't get those engines in the cooking models.

But you could get the 2.8i (later 2.9i) with AWD as the XR4x4, and people like Turbo Technics would shove some boost in them. They're rare now, but there's still a couple of fairly normal-looking Sierra hatchbacks and estates kicking around with anything from 250 to 400+bhp.
Besides the US 2.3 turbo XR4Ti there were also Cosworth-YBD based version with the giant wing in Europe:

I loving love those things, I think they look quite a bit better than the ones with the split windows, and consider how bonkers that had to look in '85. The base RS were like 200hp and the limited RS500 a bit more, though in practice people managed to get pretty insane performance out of them.

My parents had a Scorpio with the 2.8 Cologne, it was ridiculously well equipped for the time (everything fully electric, including rear seat adjustment, AC, cruise) , comfortable and a decent amount of power.

Sierra Cosworths were dedicated performance models, they weren't at all in the same vein as the Sierras being sold in the thousands as family or sales rep cars - the Sapphire came closer to that, but it was still outside the norm. Ironically, the 3-door Cosworth shell was very similar to the base model Sierra 3-door (often in 1.3 guise), and I reckon if you can find a base 3-door that has survived to now without being used to build a Cossie replica, it's quite possibly the rarest Sierra going.

The XR4i/Ti twin rear windows were unique to that model, I'm not entirely sure why they did it, as it looks kind of awkward, but ah well.

The 200bhp standard Cossie was quite detuned, hence being so easy to turn the wick up - really, you're just derestricting it back to "normal". The RS500 was full-balls homologation special with an unused 8 injector setup, bigger turbo, better intercooler and all the Group A gubbins to be able to declared the same as the raced example for certification purposes, so theres a lot of potential locked into them.

I do appreciate they've included a 'screen off' button so the display doesn't kill my night vision, it's one of first things I look for in the settings when I get in a rental.

the thing that sucks about these newer cars is that it is very hard to find good aftermarket alternatives that are under $500.

with those lovely old chrysler ones, you can just walk into a store like Best Buy or go online and find a cheap replacement that lights up with rainbow lights and does everything you want from charging your phone to even playing DVDs in some cases

There are temp up/down buttons below the screen. Shittier than dials, but better than fiddling with a touch screen.

I've always liked that, with it now being something of an open secret you're not meant to discuss that car manufacturers might slightly optimise their cars for things like record attempts, Jaguar's XJ220 top speed run involved a straight up "gently caress it, we're gonna decat this bitch".

loving weird how you can go to chevrolet and get 11 fully optioned out Z06s for the price (inflation accounted) of a single F1.

The thing is they really did build it, but then promptly decided when it was driven that it was just too much, so cancelled the idea of a production run, only building a few for racing.

I know they made the one and it got binned, but I more meant that it didn't get a bunch of them made. From the videos of it it sounds monstrous I just wish they were more of them out there.

It was about 10 years ahead of its time. If they had gone about it in the mid 2000s, it most likely would have taken off.
