The American ruling class has worked hard in order to impede the political development of the working class.

Do you seriously consider people carpooling a hundred miles across a bridge to be comparable to living overseas? People in my town in Ohio think having a passport is weird, and given the median income is around $25K that's not surprising. Only 42% of people in the US even have a passport, and it's only at that level because re-entry from Canada and Mexico require it now. You have major delusions about the ability of the average US citizen to travel internationally. Still my retirement

I'm the lazy American without a passport. I'm in Texas and if I travel 5 hours west, I'm still in the same state. If I was in Germany and travelled the same amount, I'd be in a completely different country. My reasonable options for out of country travel by car are Central America and Canada. Otherwise, I'm hopping on a plane and crossing one of two large oceans. I'll get my passport one day, but for now international travel is an expense I'm not willing to partake in. I'm sure the same is for a lot of people in the US. On a related note, I've travelled within the US all over and the different regions might as well be their own countries. The difference between the east coast, west coast, deep south, and rust belt are incredible.

I think a lot of Canadians travel more and tend to have passports at a higher rate than americans is because of this. Our domestic travel costs are extremely high, usually going to europe is just a bit more than flying across country. And why the gently caress would I spend $900 to go to Toronto when I could spend $1000 and go to Amsterdam or Berlin or Prague or something? It can be really date dependant like all flights, but quite often our domestic flights are only 20-30% cheaper than an international flight and Canada only has a few places worth visiting anyways. The US just has a way bigger population so a lot more domestic destinations.

It can cost the same or less to stay at an all-inclusive with flights in Mexico or Cuba for a week as the flight alone costs to go visit my family in Ontario. My flight from Toronto to Belize was less than the flight from Calgary to Toronto. I don't travel in Canada, I always go elsewhere.

If you think it would have been nicer to live in Czarist or Provisional Government Russia, if you were an able bodied young man, odds are you would have been thrown into the horrific meatgrinder that was World War I and died along with millions of your countrymen in imperial misadventure. Setting that aside, I suppose if you accept that worker's control will always look like the deeply impoverished and heavily embattled successor state of a mismanaged backwater empire that failed to feed its people even before its takeover, I could understand your reluctance to consider alternatives to the current order. Lucky for you, instead you'll probably get to live in a highly advanced imperial power that will catastrophically fail to meet the basic needs of its people within your lifetime thanks to capitalism, which I'm sure is much better. Indeed, I'm glad that the people who decide how we grow our food have the freedom to make such tremendous profits from agricultural practices that render land unusable for generations. Won't it be exciting, when this combined with anthropogenic climate shifts throw us into a dust bowl that would make the 1930's look like a minor drought?
