Murro is currently doing a TV mini of Watership Down, which should certainly be something.

Watership down is a fairly long book, looking at my copy it's like 450+ pages. So it's not a bad candidate for a miniseries, I suppose. I'm inherently skeptical of adaptations like that.

That's a fair stance. Just the idea of making it into a miniseries has my interest piqued. I want to see how the creation story is depicted. Loved the art in the movie.

I saw that and I'm getting a kick out of the idea. The '78 film is virtually perfect, but it'll be really cool if the new one is something more like Legend of the Guardians https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq3EAVEnW8Q

So what comes after comic book movies? Like, is it just remakes of remakes with a smattering of good stuff until end of time? What's the next trend? Video Game movies?

Depending on how Alita: Battle Angel does, anime and manga are a distinct possibility. We've already gotten Ghost in the Shell and Death Note in the past couple years.

I feel like Ghost in the Shell is gonna scare them off from making white Akira.

Black Akira, however, is decently likely. Taika Waititi has also expressed an interest in it, so we might get Maori Akira.

A search for truth and justice is hardly limited to existentialism. Man of Steel is structured using Plato's Republic, with Krypton being the 'Ideal City' with programmed breeding. Superman having the codex parallel's Plato's writings about how an ideal city is structured in the same way as an ideal soul; he internalizes the lessons of his people and emerges to give humans an ideal to strive for.

Existentialism overemphasizes subjectivity as a reaction toward Hegel's rigorous conceptions of freedom and god viz. the declaration that all men are free and are solely responsibility for all of their choices. It's deeply individualistic, "But I cannot count upon men whom I do not know, I cannot base my confidence upon human goodness or upon man’s interest in the good of society, seeing that man is free and that there is no human nature which I can take as foundational...'one need not hope in order to undertake one’s work.' " I don't see those beliefs in Man of Steel.

I agree that Krypton is utopian, and so horrifying in that, but I don't think the comparison to the Republic goes much deeper than that. I'd have appreciated a Zod monologue about the appropriately Kryptonian musical forms though.

Sartre's talk of not being able to depend on other men is in terms of justifying your own actions outside of yourself; he's talking in response to a utopian trend in Marxism, whereby faith in historical materialism and the character of the proletariat obliges you to do the good work of being in the appropriate party, and fighting for the success of such a party, basically in the model of the Bolsheviks. Sartre insists on limiting our view to what has actually happened - and in this sense he's been borne out historically, because whatever the Russian revolution meant, it was not that we can depend on our fellow men to carry on socialism after we are dead.

Batman V Superman has a little in the way of this criticism - Superman's actions in Man of Steel have not inspired humanity, Rather, they have chosen Fascism, and Doomsday, and the Superman statue. The ending is hopeful that this trend has been averted, that people will "look around [themselves]" and see Superman. I'm using Sartre for all my references because he's pretty succinct and I know his work better, but Snyder is probably thinking in terms of Christian existentialism, and the hope is that man will freely chose faith in [s]God[s] Superman.

Michelle Williams confirms she's playing Anne Weying, Eddie Brock's Ex-wife in Venom and talks a bit about the role

quote:

SR: You’ve been known to pick great roles with amazing scripts and Venom’s coming up and that has so much stacked talent. You, Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson, it amazing, so what is it about that script that’s attracting so much talent around it?

Michelle Williams: We’re having fun. Um, we’re having fun. It’s, um, well for me it’s Tom (Hardy). I just thought, well, that guy knows what he’s doing. I’m just going to go steal some of his moves, figure out what he knows. I just wanted to, you know, you’re only as good as the people you play with and I really wanted to challenge myself with him as a partner.

SR: Is Venom comparable to anything else you’ve done previously, and what can you tell us about Anne Weying?

Michelle Williams: I’ve done one other movie where I was asked to track a tennis ball with my eyes and pretend it was a giant creature thing. Not my favorite thing in the world to do, but it is a skill set and I’m trying to learn it. And uh, she’s, geez, what can I tell you? Not too much right now.

Yeah, measuring any movie against Star Wars is what leads to studios deciding everything needs to be Star Wars. It's an outlier, the moment Lucas had kickstarted the franchise again with the Special Editions (twenty years ago now) the entire thing has been turned into this alarmingly large aspect of American pop culture. Remember, originally, after Jedi came out, the series faded from memory, becoming just another thing in a larger tapestry, leaving a heavy influence and that being the legacy.

Then George did a one-two of re-release and prequels and late capitalism seized upon it and has never let it go, and now instead of this heady thing of the past that changed cinema forever, it's this weird ever-present thing that vacuums up money like nobody's business and is in the hands of the (also alarmingly) most trusted and ubiquitous entertainment company on the planet.

Justice League's gross is embarrassing on its own. But, compared to Star Wars, so is pretty much everything else released this year.
