If you want to talk about change in trucking just look at the ELD mandate: electronic logbooks have been fought by the industry since 1982, and took 35 years to go live across the industry ( today is ostensibly the first day of the ELD mandate, but DOT is so unprepared they won't start issuing citations until April).

Yeah. The longshore union organized a slowdown that turned into an employer lockout when (among other things) their employers wanted to start using barcodes and handheld scanners on containers.

Or go to the Salt Flats, where you can see the curvature while standing on the ground.

As for why BLM doesn't want him doing it on their land it's part a) they don't want to get sued by his surviving relatives for letting it happen and b) someone is going to have to clean up all the exploded rocket bits and human remains and they don't want to pay for it.

Back in HS and early college late 97-01 I worked at the local DoT office over the summers. One of my jobs was a project estimating paint usage/costs for highway repainting/paving projects. This involved going out with another summer worker, and driving the sections of highway in a vehicle with an odometer accurate to the foot. One of us would drive, and the other would record where the paint pattern changed. The established protocol for getting cost/usage was to manually comb through the entries and calculate the linear footage of each paint type by hand with a calculator. So we made an excel spreadsheet that took the input data, and ran the calculations.

The two middle aged guys that did this when there weren’t summer employees around hated the spreadsheet. They basically saw it as automation that threatened their jobs. Despite the fact the measurement process itself was incredibly labor intensive. I wonder if they ever switched over to making the measurements on satellite images...

A friend of mine bought a bunch of us starter ships back when it first announced, and another friend seems to be still vaguely excited about it all. We played with some FPS stuff where you had to wander for ages into a base to find someone to get missions. I suggested it would be awful to have to do that long walk every time you wanted a mission, but he seemed to love the idea. A few guys also thought it would be great to have multiple players in a ship and I wondered aloud what those players would be doing if they aren't flying it. "Fixing stuff", "planning routes" - oh yeah, that all sounds like a real blast. Some lovely mini-game to while away your time while one person flies the ship.
I hope it doesn't come out so I don't feel compelled to play with them and "press E to repair engine".

It exists, it's called Guns of Icarus, and it's really good.

Also, related, is a game called Angels Fall First which has crewing capital ships in combat, plus running to the flight deck to hop in fighters to launch out of them, plus boarding enemy space stations and then fighting as a space marine to capture the base. And it's loving INCREDIBLE.

FYI my name and address are on there with a fake comment as well. Check out the AG of NY website they have a searchable database to find out if you’ve been used in this way so you can file a complaint. Looks like they grabbed homeowner databases which are often public info.

Add me to the list of people whose dead relatives repeatedly railed against Net Neutrality.

"Why yes, I'm quite sure that if my hippie aunt came back from the dead after dying of complications from being a stage 4 cancer patient moved out of the path of Hurricane Matthew she would have made comments in support of corporate internet takeover, especially since she barely could operate Facebook."

There's also an entity with my last name which posted the same comment four time per day for several months. "No bots here!"
