idk i genuinely like android mostly for its notifications but im also an empty inbox take care of everything as it comes in kind of guy one of the androidpolice (lets assume hes a sergeant or detective at the android police force) is using an iphone x for a month and in the article about what he likes about ios he cites "not being aware of anything anymore" because the notifications are so bad on ios. i dont use my phone for work so id call it a negative but i can see the appeal if you get a lot of poo poo and actually have to do things with all of them that said id never call it a good os its got a shitload of problems but i do like the usage paradigm. im also p. far up googles rear end in terms of ecosystem buy in so theres that but im told that really isnt a problem on ios i also like googles material design and overall aesthetic more than apples but its not a deciding factor for me

yes... if you dismiss the notification you have to go to the notification panel to see it again i guess this is how you get those comedy screenshots of android with a hundred little icons crammed into that top bar, communicating nothing

so why do the android screenshots show multiple of the same icon until the bar fills up? what exactly does that communicate other than your status bar looks like a dishrag?

because people haven't opened those messages. it communicates that people shouldn't have those apps installed because they don't believe they're important to respond to.

Last Chance posted:huh? which part? if someone gets a message, an icon appears up top. It goes away when they open the message. If they don't want to see notifications for messages up top because they don't open their messages, they should disable notifications for the app or uninstall it because they're clearly not using it. My notification tray has 2 notifications: a reminder to do a thing when I get home and a paused podcast.

infernal machines posted:so why do the android screenshots show multiple of the same icon until the bar fills up? what exactly does that communicate other than your status bar looks like a dishrag? sometimes it means the app is poo poo that is to say it generates a new and unique notification for each thing instead of updating the existing notification. ive never seen this personally but ive seen it enough in screenshots to know thats whats happening. like hangouts will never show multiple notifications no matter how many messages you have but i think if you take five screenshots you get five notifications sometimes (rarely since this is a nougat feature) you can have multiple notifications from the same app because theyre in different notification channels. as an example my podcast app has a notification channel for playback controls and new eps (among others) so its possible to see a notification for a playing podcast while having another for a new ep. each channel is completely configurable from whether and how you want it to display to whether it uses the light or makes sounds

hypothesis: every unique feature of android is actually a work around to mitigate a terrible design decision e.g. excessive customization exists to mask the fact that the UI isn't well enough designed to function correctly out of the box

Last year, Google ran an experiment with audio ads on Google Home devices, which made a lot of people upset. Now, a CNBC report claims that Amazon might do something similar on its Echo speaker lineup. Amazon is currently in talks with brands like Procter & Gamble and Clorox for ads within specific skills, and for data-sharing agreements that’d let them dig through users’ shopping history, according to CNBC. It’s also talked with companies about sponsored placements in product searches on Echo devices, and about using customers’ purchase habits to suggest products they might like.
