Milky Moor posted:"Standing on the left side of the runway was my battle-worn X-wing fighter. Parked on the right side was my DeLorean. Sitting on the runway itself was my most frequently used spacecraft, the Vonnegut. Max had already powered up the engines, and they emitted a low, steady roar that filled the hangar. The Vonnegut was a heavily modified Firefly-class transport vessel, modeled after the Serenity in the classic Firefly TV series. The ship had been named the Kaylee when I’d first obtained it, but I’d immediately rechristened it after one of my favorite twentieth-century novelists. Its new name was stenciled on the side of its battered gray hull. I’d looted the Vonnegut from a cadre of Oviraptor clansmen who had foolishly attempted to hijack my X-wing while I was cruising through a large group of worlds in Sector Eleven known as the Whedonverse." https://twitter.com/real_lethality/status/940016218425131010 https://twitter.com/real_lethality/status/940016352902963200 https://twitter.com/real_lethality/status/940019209056260096 https://twitter.com/real_lethality/status/940019864353329157

doingitwrong posted:As the whole scheme seems to be winding down (or is the lawsuit the start of a new chapter?) I’ve been thinking a lot about endings. Because if there is going to be a ending to this thing, there are going to be a lot of lasts. Many of them we’ll never get to know, their contributions will be hidden in confidential files and other dark places unlikely ever to see the light of day. Here are some soon to be unsung figures and moments. Are they in the future or the past? It will be me. I will, at the last moment, spite pledge for a completionist package because I will angrily shake my fist at fate and know that CRs godlike hand has been coding all night just for me. When I do this, I will demand that he bring a stuffed titanic toy to trial, and when he takes the stand he will rub it vigorously along the surface near the microphone, so as he talks there is a constant “shhhhhuuhshhshsjiushhshshsh” sound that annoys everybody. This is my whale demand.

I was born at the beginning of the 80s. It took me some time to be able to a) remember stuff and b) input stuff into a keyboard. Thus I remember the 80s mostly as playing Elite, Defender of the Crown, Prince of Persia and Monkey Island, before moving on to Doom. It was a good time for me.

Codezombie posted:I was around in the 80's, the 80's sucked. I'm glad it's gone. I too was around, and it's loving hilarious how it's metastasized. For example, the British punk scene was a reaction against the concept of 'no future' against the background of the western european theater; the eighties were largely bleak until we drew back from the edge in '84/'85. On the other hand, John Hughes and the brat pack. Everyone of the age that informed us is going to start dying soon, sparking waves of nostalgia and spending. They've already had a couple of false starts, but the movie remake mill is still hitting up 1980s poo poo. I'm still waiting for the rise in Russia as the bad guy again. The Irony horizon is no longer just curved, but bent.
