The claim thrown out there by ZP was that I somehow invented a new ideology. The claim is verifiably incorrect. Cingulate posted:Across a sufficiently large space, all these terms are indeed practically meaniningless. Eg, if a person who calls Obama a socialist and a person who calls Trump a fascist argue, usage of the term capitalism will make everything even worse. This goes for, uh, every word I don’t know exactly the ideological space between r guyovich and LK but even they can’t agree what capitalism is above. Hence my contention that quizzing people on whether they “support capitalism” is sophomoric bullshit that generates heat but no light.

Nevvy Z posted:Have you ever read any other post by Ytala ever? Because like, yeah, he has. To be fair, he seemed to be criticizing the idea of generalizing based on anecdotal experience, which is a reasonable enough point to make (though it's something pretty much everyone does to some extent). I would never expect to convince anyone else based off of anecdotal experience. As I said, there's no way to really convey these things to others in a way I could really expect them to just accept on faith. That being said, I'm not extrapolating my experiences into some sort of condemnation of these people. I'm just pointing out how easy it is to "absorb" the assumptions and beliefs of the people you spend time around, and I can guarantee that most politicians are going to be spending a lot of time around highly educated/well-off industry folks (like lobbyists, executives, or even fellow politicians). It's hard to really "go against the current" in a situation like that, and it's easy to just behave in ways that allow you to get along well with most of your peers (which, as mentioned, are going to generally be other well-off, highly educated people). The point is mainly that existing in that sort of environment makes it very difficult for a person to become even remotely radicalized, because you end up having difficulty demonizing the people you spend a lot of time with. It's basically the same concept as "it's harder for people who spend a lot of (positive) personal time with PoC to become really racist", except working towards harmful ends because the people in question are the wealthy/well-off instead of ethnic minorities.

Nepal's a weird case, since it's a multi-party parliamentary democracy, and parties frequently have to form coalitions. The current ruling party is center-left, but the Maoists have led the government a bunch of times over the past couple decades.
