It most certainly is. The Equalizer is kind of a low rent American Ultra but Denzel is charismatic enough as usual to make it worth a watch on Netflix.

American Ultra was great except for like the last 3 minutes which are ok if you like unhappy endings.

Black Panther isn't really revolutionary for being the first black superhero movie; as mentioned, there's been a shitload. It's noteworthy because it's being pushed exactly as hard as the superhero movies starring white people. The other examples mentioned are either very tenuously superhero movies or... weren't really taken seriously, to say the least.

It seems revolutionary that a big studio is making a movie with a mostly black cast that will be a blockbuster instead of being a limited run in select theaters.

Right; the same was the case with Wonder Woman. The ‘revolutionary’ novelty is that the film is being promoted to white men.

Also The Matrix. And then we have, like, every X-Men film (or does Storm count as a sidekick?).

The trouble is not only that the claim is inaccurate, but also that the criteria are weirdly over-specific.

The revolution in Black Panther is against T'Challa for wanting to drag Wakanda into the modern era and open it's doors to other people's and countries. Gold Jaguar is a traditionalist who wants to overthrow the new leader and keep things exactly how they are.

At no point does anyone go to America.

YA is a genre which is predominantly female, no one expected anything else for those movie series.

Yeah, YA has a non-embarassing level of diversity to begin with, it's not like superhero comics where they've barely risen above the level of skateboardpowers.txt almost three decades later and Marvel's CEO is terrified of looking upon G. Willow Wilson lest she turn to dust before his very eyes.

Like, it's objectively good that there will finally be a non-white lead in a Marvel movie. But "Hereditary Monarch from The Lost World" is kinda regressive even on its own terms (a fuckin Monarch?), before you get to the fact that it's a mash-up of early 20th Century tropes about Africa and the name of a revolutionary socialist party. That was probably uncomfortable at the time, now it's just bizarre.

Okay I went and looked through a whole bunch of articles about the Black Panther movie and interviews with the cast and others and the word that kept popping up repeatedly was "groundbreaking". The phrases "unprecedented predominantly black cast" and "first black superhero in mainstream [American] comic books" also kept occurring fairly often. Like, really really often. Almost as often as "70s spy film" came up in articles about Winter Soldier. :v:

There's also this article from Rolling Stone titled Black Superheroes Matter: Why a 'Black Panther' Movie Is Revolutionary that actually goes into detail over the question but there's also a whole bunch of other articles that vaguely frame the film as being revolutionary without really explaining how or why. There really is a lot of chatter online about the film being revolutionary but they usually don't go into any details, it's like they assume it's just a given. I'm pretty sure that many of them just latched onto the word because they heard it in the song in the trailer.

I posted earlier about how Wonder Woman's movie plot/origin was weirdly similar to Black Panther (royalty from a hidden kingdom, etc) and it occurred to me that they were taking great steps to frame each hero as an Other. That doesn't really happen all that much in other superhero movies - even an actual alien like Superman got an origin where he was raised in Kansas.

MoS and BvS went to great lengths to portray Superman as something otherwordly. Yeah, he was raised in Kansas, but it was very clear he never fit in with the locals, and has always been a loner.

Yeah but he struggled to understand his powers and his potential role from a human perspective. Plus "never fit in" and "loner" doesn't actually make him Other, we all know people like that. They're very relatable traits.

Once again, the qualifying criteria becomes "marketing". Everything the Marvel films excel at and venerate revolve around being marketed very, very well, and that's basically it.

Blankman kicks rear end and is a lot darker and heavier than I remembered it being as a kid, Meteor Man is more fun for all the cameos.

Meteor Man marked the first time my family had a theater all to ourselves. Mom initially hushed us but gave up, and by the time the catwalk confrontation happened I was in love. Don't know if it would hold up well, but I also kinda want to keep my experience totally intact.

Yeah and like, Black Panther and A Wrinkle in Time are also probably some of the first films where a black director/cast have been granted a budget of that size. It’s also a matter of resources, not just marketing.

I mean... yeah. These aren't things that are necessarily meaningful for the quality of the movie, but they're meaningful for the state of the film industry- black actors and directors are finally being given access to "the big time," the same way white actors and directors have been. Black Panther doing well could cause an actual, meaningful sea change regarding the racism that Hollywood has historically exhibited; it won't end racism, but it'll certainly be a step in the correct direction.

Obviously if you think Hollywood as a concept is inherently fatally flawed, this doesn't really mean anything, but a lot of folks don't see it that way and are really loving excited about this.
