Well, no, but it feels that way when the report has made it past the initial filters and isn't about widely used third party software.

They were one of the first, I remember special Gmail support to indicate PayPal messages due to the proliferation of scams.

An Open Letter on Why We’re Removing Usernames, Addressed to the Worst Ones We’ve Ever Seen

What’s in a name?

You see, DaddyzPrincess29*, we all have real names. Good, noble names that took weeks, perhaps months to choose— from Hannah to Jordan to Chloe. And what we’ve discovered, kinkyweedzz, is that those names are actually perfectly fine when it comes to connecting with people. So listen closely laidback___stu, because this applies to you — even if you are straight chilling right now on a basement futon.

Before the new year, we’re removing OkCupid usernames. It’s starting with a test group and will soon be rolled out to everyone on OkCupid, so all users will need to update their profiles with their real names. We know, this is tough to hear — especially for StayingPawwsitive, Dootdootledootd0 and Britney__Tears. It’s because, like the recent goodbye we said to AIM screen names, it’s time to keep up with the times. We want you, BigDaddyFlash916, to go by who you are, and not be hidden beneath another layer of mystique. Even if that mystique is crucial to you and your dating life, unicorn__jizz.

idk i mean, i hate usernames as a concept because weve reached the point where its difficult to find a unique one, and we already have a unique property that we can use for logging in: email addresses

get rid of them and dont show anything in their place

this is kind of a unique case since the entire purpose of that service is to meet irl. you can be anonymous online all you want but okc cannot be online-only by its nature

although if they do this they should robots.txt the entire site, yeah

it'll be like facebook, where the names are still fake, we just pretend they aren't.

it's also going to leak a bunch of real names of old users though, and that's bad.

Yeah it’s gonna be a haven for creeps tracking down women that turn them down in messages. friends have shown me the creepy messages guys send and sometimes how they get pissed off when getting shut down or ignored. now imagine that weirdo knowing your real name and googling you to get “revenge” for shutting him down after he compared you to his favorite my little pony character.

if I were a woman I’d be getting out of okc immediately

what if you're a porn star and they google your profile and are like "wtf this dingus hasn't had as nearly as much sex as we expect!!!" and then you get fired. that would suck

but seriously, it's on the internet, little you can do to stop your employers or anyone else really from accessing it. what one would expect is that the government would institute regulations which make such information "unactionable" or whatever by your employer. also shoring up of unfair dismissal protections would be required to move the onus onto the employer.

I just want to remind everyone that merely having a Facebook or Twitter account as a woman basically deputizes a Mongol horde of creeps to send you threatening and disgusting messages unprompted, and if they can attach your name to that account they will absolutely mail you poo poo, call your work with made up accusations, and phone in false reports to your local police.

before you apply for a job upload a bunch of erotic photos of yourself which includes signage for the company you're applying for. that way they'll know you're really really dedicated

a lady friend at my last company made the mistake of making her steam handle incredibly vaguely feminine and boy howdy does she get the most vile loving poo poo whenever she plays any game. like it's not even very feminine it's more neutral than anything but jfc do nerds pick up on this poo poo like sharks smelling a drop of blood from miles away

she finds it all hilarious and sad and just blocks em' or leaves so at least it's not causing her actual problems irl :sigh:

Doesn’t Tinder / Bumble already require real names (or at least facebook-real names)?

Still, the old account thing could screw people-hopefully they’ll do something smart like forcing you to opt-in before you show up on and can use the site again

okcupid doesn't currently do any validation against facebook like other dating sites/apps, so either
1) they're introducing facebook account validation, so whatever your facebook name is will get pushed to okc
2) it's a new freeform field but they'll make it validate against "real" names like Hannah or Jordan or Chloe
3) everyone has to use a credit card now and even if they don't charge you they'll use the name associated with it

so I just deployed a POC for Zscaler ZPA in about two hours. pretty slick tech, and we are finding more and more uses for it to provide a secure, seamless user access experience.

is anyone using this in a production environment? so far it has delivered exactly as described, and the ease of use is ridiculous.

I just logged in to delete my account, and got prompted to provide a first name in a freeform field. I imagine they are going to validate in some way tho or its no different than a username

I guess the "no, you have to use a real name" bit is scheduled for a year from now, because it causes less attrition to phase it in as several smaller changes.

I bet they were panicking over their user name policy. I had an account before and closed it. The notice at that time said that user name would be unavailable ever again. They also limited special characters in user name fields.
