Right, so Jari Mäenpää has now released Wintersun 2.0, a remixed version of the debut album. It now starts off with a floaty instrumental intro followed by Winter Madness, with Beyond the Dark Sun following that. Apparently it was originally meant to be this way, but honestly I think having Dark Sun as an intro to the album was a better and more elegant solution.

Still, it's not a huge niggle and I have to admit the remix sounds pretty drat good even on my tabletop speakers, so hey.

https://wintersun.bandcamp.com/album/wintersun-20

I've listened to the original probably a thousand times and I can't really tell the difference. Agree with you though that Beyond the Dark Sun makes a better intro.

On a Wintersun note, are there any bands (besides Ensiferum I guess) that sound similar to the debut album? Back in the day Wintersun was maybe my favorite band, but the subsequent albums... I mean, they're not awful, but Jari should spend more time writing riffs than masturbating in a DAW.

It’s not really the same thing but Wolfheart hits the spot in a certain way for me. Are you a fan of them?

They've been on my (too drat long) list of bands to check out at some point, but after giving a few of their songs a listen, I'm pretty into them. I can see why you say it hits the spot, although yeah it's not really the same thing as Wintersun, but it definitely falls closer to them than to like... either the CoB/Kalmah or At the Gates flavor of melodeath. (Melodic death metal is kind of a stupid genre classification. Children of Bodom, Insomnium, and At the Gates don't really sound anything alike to me yet they all get called that.)

Thanks for the recommendation!

They do all sound distinctly different - more melodic - from the bulk of Death Metal though, so taking into account the fact they also sound different from each other would require using more sub-genres, not less. Unless you want to just call everything Metal, but then that's not very helpful either.

If you like Wolfheart, it should go without saying that you check out all of Tuomas Saukkonen's older bands.

Before the Dawn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J8xf3nuCtw
It's the closest to Wolfheart but with some cleans mixed in

Black Sun Aeon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qevs15TW_gE
It's like a slower, doomier version of his "melodeath" style

They all have his signature "sound"/melodic riffing & vocals. I think since they were all so similar he just decided to collapse them all into one and focus on Wolfheart.

He's a fantastic songwriter and he is a loving beast if you ever watch is gym workout videos that he sets to his music ( under username "OneManArmy" ):

He also posts tons of stuff related to Wolfheart/albums there, like this Piano recording he did at 5AM for...reasons...

If it's two or three seconds it would probably fall under fair use, but you could also probably ask a smaller band(like one local to you for example) for permission and they might be cool with it

From 3:47 to 4:01 you could chop out a couple seconds from this solo.

It may be helpful if you told us whether you wanted ONLY a guitar solo or something with full instrumentation behind it.

Here's one that's only guitar:
