That generation of VW is pretty reliable.

My wife put 350000km on one. Then we sold it to my sister who put another 80000 on it before it finally cost more to fix than it was worth.

However whoever decided on the location of the oil filter can eat a dick.

Umm, that gen (MK4) had a terrible reputation for reliability, and it's well deserved. The 1.8t eats coilpacks and they all eat window regulators, among other things. I believe that's the generation with the coolant migration through the wiring harness too.

Bad Angus! Bad!
Is what the green birbs do. The tiny birbs that come in a variety of colors burble and chirp, the big grey birbs cuss in your voice and then chuckle when Mom yells at you for using that kind of language in her house, and the medium-sized green ones just scream.

The big white birbs are too busy dismantling everything around them to bother making noise.

I can get why PT Cruiser get a bad rap given most of them have the Chrysler glass auto tragic transmission. My brother's 05 auto blew up the trans at 80k miles. A co worker of mine blew his 2003 auto trans up at 120k miles and he bought another 2010 that he's still driving. The rare ones that were a 5 speed manual like my father in law's 2001. It just took the poo poo thrown at it and kept going. He popped the timing belt at 119k miles, and after replacement of the belt on the original engine it kept going. My wife and I replaced the clutch and master and slave cyls at 130k miles, we replaced the radiator fan since the high speed winding on the fan motor shorted (also happened to my brother's car and my friends original 2003 car.) Dad in law drove that 2001 to 240k miles and gave it to a friend who is still driving it.

I had a 99.5 2.0, and never had any trouble that I didn't cause. I spent a lot of time working on other people's MK4s, including all other engines, VR6, 1.8T, and TDI.
