Finally saw it last night. Overall, I'd give it an extremely solid B+/A-, aside from the useless casino subplot and Rose's cringe worthy intro scene. Mark Hamill owns every scene he is in, and given that he Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley sell the poo poo out of their uncertainty as two people who share the experience of having power and responsibility thrust on them far before they were ready. "Join me... Please." And every day being Hux's worst day is maybe the best part of this Trilogy. The trans-light ram didn't bother me. There are a lot of reasons that it could work: it probably requires something with the mass of a cruiser to punch through shields and armor, and even in its darkest days, the Rebellion couldn't afford to throw away a cruiser and its entire crew. Plus, everyone knew that someone could use an airliner as a suicide missile, but no one adapted their security and tactics until someone actually went and did it. I think a lot of people had valid complaints about how unnecessary the Leia flies through space scene was, but I thought the visual was fine: that's how someone doing an EVA actually looks. Not swimming or flying, but sliding statically, clothes unruffled by an absent wind, seemingly pulled by an invisible string. Crakkerjakk posted:My takeaway is that while 7 and 8 are enjoyable star wars-y visual spectacles, I read the Thrawn Trilogy back in the day and I just feel like that was straight up better. Better villains, heroes, fewer plot holes, etc etc etc. Also, a prediction: Title Crawl: EPISODE IX THE FLAMES OF REVOLUTION Princess Leia was needed back on her home planet. Anyway...

The proper to answer to "Why haven't they always used that tactic" is that star wars is a soap opera for nerds, shut up idiot. No battlefield outcome or tactic has ever weighed upon the plot in Star Wars; it's always been about the intentions, actions and struggles of the villains and heroes. A dozen X-wings making it anywhere near the death star is dumber. An imperial admiral accidentally coming out of light speed too far from Hoth is dumber. A moon-borne shield generator that exists purely so Han Solo, Carrie Fisher, and Ewoks have something to do in Act 3 is dumber. Droid control ships. Clone troopers that can shoot down giant colony ships, but can't see Count Dooku's escape pod. Obi-Wan chasing a robot battle lightsaber general on lizardback. Wahhh my star wars is unrealistic!!! Episode 8 will fight right in with its peers, and it's totally OK. There have never been universal sensible rules or physics to the universe. Plot is priority.

We've reached the point where we're pointing to the prequel trilogy to defend the new trilogy. George won.

I have problems with the story of the movie and how everything is a result of Poe not getting thrown in the brig the first 30 minutes of the movie, but the ramming isn't one. Beyond all the reasons why this was the first time it was done (to include the fact that maybe the rebellion doesn't like suicide tactics) the real reason is its space opera that uses futuristic weaponry in a movie series heavily influenced by ww2. I will never be bothered by star wars pulling cool poo poo out of their rear end because its always been a slightly campy scifi movie.

loving love that little x-wing maneuver Poe does after destroying that turret. We haven't really seen an x-wing move like that yet and it's very Battlestar Galactica-esque with the Vipers, so that's cool and gently caress just the whole opening scene and bombers owns. I do love how much they integrate weaponry and such from now and the last 50-100 years. Especially in R1

Movie was good but it feels like they blew 800 mil on special effects and skipped decent writing. Space opera could have been a little better than static car chase in space. Rian offered some cool directions to take things and then made some strange decisions such as the whole completely useless Poe subplot, not enough Benicio del Toro with a relevant plot and same with Mark Hamill. Also, killing off people that could have had a cool storyline with no explanation. Oh yeah, the "people's lives are really important I can't lose anyone" (loses almost everyone). Too many scenes just ended in confusion or frustration at the storytelling.

Watched it for the second time tonight. I understand and agree with a lot of the complaints levied against it but I quite enjoyed it because it was still true to the spirit of Star Wars (although I am fully in camp “should have cut Finn and rose side quest to save on run time”. Benicio hamming it up wasn’t appreciated for once- does he have a contract w Disney to do this in all their franchises? Etc etc with that whole storyline) The luke/ren/rey parts were great and I like this interpretation of the force and the willingness to “kill” off some of the mythology related to the Jedi/sith and the force. Genuinely did not know what to expect with Rey or Ren possibly changing sides up to the very end of their time together. Bomber part at the beginning felt like a direct homage to WW2 air combat movies, which I believe were a big influence on Lucas. Agree with you lightpole with killing people off. Hey remember fam favorite admiral ackbar? Let’s just write him out real quick. Could have given skywalker a few more tender moments, especially with his OT cast.

I look forward to Episode IX, where BB-8 just rolls around fighting everyone, and the rest of the cast exists as background scenery. The robot's use as deus ex machina somehow made prequel R2-D2 look grounded.

Holy poo poo, how did I not think of that before? If Poe hadn't sent The Most Useless (Former) Stormtrooper and Random Quirky Asian Third Wheel off on the shittiest filler episode side quest, Benicio Del Stuttero doesn't let on about hey maybe there are some cloaked shuttles out there. Rey and Kylo have an actual knock-down drag-out, maybe Admiral Toxic Command Compartmentalization doesn't go full aloha snackbar, Phasma doesn't go out like a punk bitch, and Luke sits on his lovely little island and beats his dick.
