I think the SA Forums are fundamentally based on opposition: The internet is loving stupid, it makes you stupid, and whatever we're doing here is always some sort of indictment of what "everyone else" is doing. this dude has a lot of lol but I got drunk with t_s_m once and also bought a Jeep hard top from him once

It was better than any news channel because not only did you have news from every outlet being disseminated in real time but there were goons posting from pretty close to ground zero on what they were seeing. I’d never seen anything like it.

I registered this account so that I could ask someone how to right click and save-as. I started lurking in ‘99 and pretty much only hung out in GBS and DPPH. When in DPPH I could only see the embedded photos and links, but I could never figure out what some of the posters meant when they posted a link and the text: “right-click; save as.” It was like some kind of code. Eventually people started to move away from embedding 50 pics in one post and started just putting the first photo from a set and a link, so I was poo poo out of luck because I couldn’t figure out how to access the links. One day somebody posted a Jade Hsu teaser and a link and I finally registered an account rather than lose my mind wondering what she looked like naked. I think my first post on the forums was “‘Right click; save as’ WHAT THE gently caress DO YOU MEAN?” I think it was Stuntcock who very graciously saved my sanity without calling me a retard. I haven’t gotten much smarter in the years since. This was early Jade Hsu, not emaciated heroin addict Jade Hsu. It seems important to note that.

i kind of like being this invisible force behind large chunk of the internet. i've been hanging out, shitposting and swapping 'nyms for, gosh, 18 years on the net. sometimes i wish i had some lasting relationships. sometimes i've met people in multiple personas and made friends multiple times. but i've seen too many people get doxed or harassed and it's made me paranoid. it sucks because you're never truly interacting. yeah i can shitpost and lol, but sometimes i want to keep itreal and share a personal ancedote or fact about my (awesome) city and don't because anonymity. this split personality thing is a drag and i'm too cheap to make multiple accounts here so i mostly seriouspost on reddit which goes... poorly

I wasn’t even necessarily talking about political issues, just basic squabbles. me: “Yes, I’m hearing that you think I’m a piece of poo poo. Do you have any recent, relevant examples or is this just because you enjoy being pissed off?” As you said, though, I do think I tend to disengage as soon as I realise whatever conflict is unsalvageable at the moment.

extra row of teeth posted:Wetlegs was originally brought up by me as an example of Helldump actually doing good. It got that fucko perma'd helldump led to the creation of WDDP (an acronym for Worst D&D Poster), a thread in helldump that was later turned into an offsite once helldump closed. WDDP was basically LF before LF became the LF we remember after the McCain toxx. After Helldump closed, everyone from WDDP flooded into LF, then a sizeable number of people from outside the site flooded into WDDP during Occupy. A short while later Occupy started to collapse and LF was closed after the maggotmaster/deafbypills incident. This caused a second flood into WDDP, where it became too big for it's britches and everyone involved went to Twitter - where they mostly still are. Kiwifarms is kind of an ironic development because it is in fact simply a larger version of Helldump drawing from a more, ahem, politically diverse base. It expanded it's focus from Chris-Chan to the general internet in the last few years, and ironically (and they don't even always realize this) a lot of the WDDP diaspora get caught up in their mock threads. This in turn points to a possible future for KiwiFarms, where after the site either collapses or turns on itself the community splinters the members reconfigure their behaviors and beliefs to still poo poo on people to feel good about themselves but mask it with radical politics, making it ok. just like their predecessors. there's only one lesson here, and it is that tricking yourself into thinking that certain kinds of internet nastiness is both funny and beneficial to society is a fast-track to opening up pandora's box. I think I'm probably the only person who ever join SA because of Digg. I still miss that dumbass button on every thread One weird, dumb piece of SA culture that is mostly gone was The Bad Thread in tbb, aka a thread about Game Of Thrones and bitching about GRRM. God, I read so many awful GRRM side projects from that thread, and they were soooo awful. Anyone else remember Pear-Shaped Man? That whole thread was fueled by him taking forever to release books, but now most have just given up and people don't care enough to be that same kind of angry. Also the time when they ironically wrote a novel length porn parody of it. Also, I know that SAS is practically a completely separate site from the rest of this place, but man, that place was crazy in it's prime. It's still the best sports forum on Earth, but it's just lost so many people over the years. Like, people used to compete to be the first to make big effort threads or GDTs, and nowadays it's an afterthought. Twitter and discord have really hurt game day threads.

Without taking the time to mega massive effort post I will say that the feeing of being on the ground floor of a thread that ended up producing something special is a truly unique internet experience. Like I’m specifically thinking of the retard masturbator thread and like the 2nd post was “So you work from home, OP?” and then then just like 3 pages of empty quoting it because we were witnessing a nuclear burn in real time. Slenderman was similar because nothing else in the thread got that much of response and even in the moment posters were getting severely disturbed by the images like right away.

I sort of grew up reading the forums. The sense of humor here became part of my life largely due to 9/11. I lived near the Pentagon, and had no idea how to process what happened, but when I could get dial tone for an internet connection (all the phone lines were in use) and thought to check the forums, tribute.jpg was waiting, and I learned to laugh. The passion of McDonald's photoshops were also pretty instrumental in my beginning to question religion. Besides photoshops, what I've really loved here are the stories, fictional or not. Watching pppowerbook unfold was amazing. Big peeler, humper monkey, Bruiser and all the other story tellers we've had over the years have been a lot of fun

I joined based off the stories that were posted on the frontpage's Comedy Goldmine section. Namely the interesting stories of people in different professions, like background extras or being shanghaied into going to a Rocky Horror screening. Clearly embellished to spice things up. but a fun read on a slow day at work. I suspect that lead to the rise of GBS superstars, if you didn't sign on to show off your photoshop skills you had a tale to tell and even a simple thread recounting lovely customer service could end up with someone with an interesting story get asked for more tales. 2004 onwards lead to the rise of Humper Monkey, Bruiser and Ten Foot Ant who latched onto the attention this gave them. Angry Bee Dance was one of the last as it became clear that he ran out of poo poo to make up about being a kung fu hotel worker in Brisbane. And there was a Helldump to send him off. 10 Foot and Humper were the same people. The search being completely broken made it so people were unable to tell that 10 Foot has a bit of a Walter Mitty thing, once claiming to have been the victim of an airshow crash in Germany during the Cold War in Germany. He persisted with this despite showing photos of him shirtless with pretty much no scars you'd expect from having burning jet fuel splash over you. This lead to the creation of Humper Monkey, a grizzled Cold War vet cliche, complete with ex-wives and trying to beat the Goku out of bastard sons along with past stories of getting trapped in abandoned munition stores and eventually Nazi ghosts that tipped people off. I think Humper conveniently "died" shortly after this tale got called out. Later on 10 Foot became some "horror stories from DnD" star with tales of slovenly nerds making GBS threads up his gaming sessions.

I shared a computer with 3 brothers and kept seeing somethingawful pop up in our history. I started out reading Jeff K, Photoshop Friday, legal battles, and some of the other archived front page stuff. Eventually I started reading the articles daily and made the jump to lurking in the forums. I think I must have registered an account when I realized that I couldn't see attachments or when GBS was locked to the public. I almost never posted except for in Fyad here and there if I thought I had no chance of being banned or anything. Most of my time on the internet before that was either reading yahoo and msn, looking up walkthroughs and easter eggs, or sports related material. The memes and photoshops and some of the more epic threads (Port-a-potty guy, bruiser, etc) really blew me away here. I also thought the it's a mystery, robot fauxtests, magnetic army toys / dinosaur stuff IRL was hilarious. There was a Chatroulette thread which was fun for a while until the percentage of old guys with their dicks out went from 5% to literally every other chat that you got. I browsed through high school and most of college and then kind of dropped off after GBS 2.0 when most threads that I saw were full of 1 sentence posts. After spending more time outside of SA over the past 5 years I'm starting to realize that social media and a lot of what's out there is just people looking for pageviews, lists taken from reddit, or basically the same garbage over and over. I've discovered the sub forums and that the quality on SA is still here, just not necessarily concentrated in GBS (like I used to think). I'd like to see the forums carry on as it seems like there's a lot of great people on here and there aren't really any other communities like this on the web. I also appreciate that goons call each other out and keep each other honest and I think that's a big part of what makes the forums work.
