I eat a lot of Veggie burgers and am not a vegetarian. I kinda think the Boca all American burger tastes like a real hamburger. Not really a good hamburger but one of those mediocre burgers you get at a gas station. I don't eat Veggie burgers to save the world. I like burgers but eating beef all the time isn't healthy.

It's weird hamburgers became the target all meat substitutes went after. Like vegan sausage exists but all meat substitutes seem to exist to make hamburgers primarily. Go after stuff heavily flavored and mixed with other things why don't ya? Literally no one on earth would know if a pepperoni in a hot pocket was zero percent meat.

Aside from veggie patties, which can really spice up a sandwich, it's mostly bad, overpriced, or both. I don't think it's actually that weird. The best way to serve TVP is to mix it up with a bunch of spices and dehydrated vegetables. Nobody really wants to eat that on its own but if you put it on a sandwich it works just fine, because you've got some bread and vegetables to go with it. You can make a mean chili with it too, but that's a lot more effort than just buying patties and cooking a family meal in 30 minutes. I think a good analogy would be falafel, which is really a sort of bean kofta that's stood up for centuries on its own, but would never work as a meat imitation. When I was a kid at camp we loved this 'fickin' (fake chicken) stuff, I'm not sure if it had a different name. Didn't taste like chicken but it was great with rice and Sriracha. At a certain point they had to restrict it to just the vegetarians because everybody preferred it over the meat.

Falafel definitely stands on its own as a delicious filling for whatever or as an entree. Vegetarian refried beans are also usually superior to the other canned varieties if that is your jam.

Ah, but now back to the collective action problem. In the USA at least, this problem could be solved by simply ending government subsidies to cattle farmers. But then that makes imported argentianan beef more attractive, so you have to ban beef imports too I guess.

Carbon taxes suck though. In almost every single country they've been applied in they're used as a way to shift the tax-burden downwards on the income scale. If they'd actually be used to decrease consumption (with the government saving the income) then the immidiate result would be a recession and that's still only if the central bank is asleep at the wheel.

In the world of moral and religious philosophy you have a lot of choices. Athiest/agnostic means you should be a humanist and care about humans. Rough going but it works for me. In the Abrahamic religions of Islam/Christianity/Judaism you are loving required to be a good steward to our dumb earth. In none of these you should be intentionally destructive to our planet and the future of its people. So what the gently caress are you doing you redneck trash? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_toHjogc_s

As it happens we're kind of a dumb species sometimes. Like, you're not wrong, but plenty of people have internalized 'I'm a good person, so the things that I do are good and right (or at least good enough)' to the point that it precludes introspection or personal development. And a few people just don't even remotely give a gently caress because by nature or nurture their empathy is broken. Psychology is working on the latter, appropriate education in critical thinking can help with the former, the only thing that the average person can maybe do to curb the suffering to below-extinction levels is fighting to get political power away from the assholes among us ASAP. I don't personally advocate violence as the mechanism for that, largely because I'm not a subject-matter expert on it, but I can see why people would when the damage now is already happening and will lead to, at a minimum, millions of previously-preventable deaths over the coming years.

The "gently caress the earth"/"trigger libs" thing is definitely part of rolling coal but I'm pretty sure people would still do it it the clouds were totally harmless. It seems like every tinkering based hobby has the thing where you pick some thing that has some effect then tune the thing to do that the most to show off. Like nerds tweeking the memory timings on their computers in ways that would literally never impact the running of any application ever but is "fun" to show off it you are able to get yours more than the next guy. Like I get why it's fun to make a thing you know about do a thing it's not supposed to or do a thing more than someone else's and making the truck exhaust goes crazy seems a lot less obscure than like computer enthusiast stuff that I've done. If it was just black clouds of harmless steam or something I think they'd still do it just as much, the "gently caress the earth" stuff is just extra for people telling them not to do it.

Obviously it goes without saying that you would be made fun by everyone on both sides if you did this.

Of course, I think people just overplay the "people do it because they HATE EARTH" or whatever, when it seems like it falls in line with the dumb stuff people do in every hobby and the hurting earth stuff is just an additional layer. Like I am sure they love that it "triggers libs" as an additional layer but it seems like it's so much like every single tinkering hobby having a bunch of "tune a thing to some extreme then show each other how good you did it". Like no one actually needs to buy 15 of the same motherboard to sort out which one does the smoothest electricity conversion so they can lower the timings on a memory module by one tiny step.

No, you're wrong and they deserve death. Look, there are people that buy different engine parts and tool around to get the most horse power, and they take their trucks to tractor pulls and compete. If these purpose built trucks spew extra Co2 or soot at the tractor pull nobody thinks twice about it. This shows that your analogy is wrong because there is something fundamentally different between tractor pull trucks or truck racing and rolling coal. The difference is that coal rollers are doing it to be assholes and they're competing with each other to see who can be the biggest public nuisance.

I think James Hansen has proposed something like this, but maybe it was Kevin Anderson, or maybe both. In any case climate policy shouldn't aim to reduce consumption, since consumption doesn't cause climate change.
