the abc's of etrian odyssey

A) ariadne thread. it warps you back to town, so you should always have one, and it only costs like 100 gold. there's only one "escape spell" in this game and it's a limit break that takes like 10 turns in combat without dying to charge, so this is your only real way out if you find yourself in a bad or even unfixable position. always double-check your inventory before going into the dungeon. nine out of ten doctors recommend it to prevent ragequits, and the tenth guy is dead.

B) poison kills. it's fixed damage based on the potency of the skill that inflicts it. an enemy that inflicts poison at the beginning of the game that does 48 damage per turn, will do 48 damage per turn even if you come back at lv99. likewise, your own poison spells do fixed damage. a high-level poison spell will, provided it hits, do more damage than most enemies have health for the first 15 floors. always bring curative items, even if you have a dedicated healer--you never know when they're gonna eat a hard luck crit and die, or get silenced or paralyzed or whatever.

this works both ways with all status effects, of course. they can be your worst enemy if you aren't prepared for them, or your greatest asset.

C) FOE. they're super powerful, but you can beat them with good strategy or good cheese builds. still, it isn't recommended that you fight them on the floor you meet them. if you're confident that you can take on the strongest monsters on the floor above them, then maybe you're statistically ready to fight an FOE. they're good EXP and good materials for preparing for real bosses, though.

Romancing SaGa 2 question: I know people talk about grinding out charm immunity for some fights (like the final one) but... where/when can you actually start fighting enemies that use charm and is there anything you can do to try and increase your chances of learning an ability dodge?

It's also really dumb how Leon starts with double cut for 1h swords but nobody can learn it via trainers because it wasn't 'sparked' or whatever. I'd like to have been able to use it on other characters since it apparently sparks other/better skills. But at least emperor Achilles is kicking rear end with a 2h sword. Just learned waterfowl(fall?) strike and being able to hit a vertical column of enemies with him is a godsend.

There's two crafty ways to avoid the final bosses charm poo poo. One, there's a demon bracelet equipment thing that, once equipped onto your current Emperor, boosts their stats and makes them immune to charm but makes it so they lose LP if you stay at any Inn and you can only rest in your bed in the castle. Just equip it right before the final boss and the LP loss won't matter. Or, if you're really crafty, you can bring a female-only party because the final boss can't charm females but will still try, wasting her turns

Back to XB2, I also thought it was weird how Nia calling Rex a kid was played as a joke, as Rex quips back that she looks the same age as him, but they gave her the oldest-sounding voice actor in the cast so far (Gramps aside). She's also the biggest culprit of "delivers traditional line while in-game character over-exaggerates their actions like they're in a stage play" which yeah is more about direction than the acting itself but still, the dub is bad.

possible spoilers about Nia's VA, total speculation on my part: I know Malos said something about "this is just like 500 years ago" so I don't know if they're gonna pull the ol Ancient Anime Girl trope on me but if that's the case it still wouldn't make sense to make her voice older than she looks because what is her vocal cords the only thing about her that age? Plus, she sounds older than Malos and Jin who both look psychically older than her so wouldn't their voices be even more significantly different? I don't even though at this point I'm just anticipating people's justification for the dub being so bad

Tidus and Auron definitely.

Yuna still delivers her lines stilted as gently caress in Dissidia, but I can give her a pass for that because that was likely voice direction and.. well, it's loving Dissidia. Plus, she does a drat fine job in Valkyria Chronicles, so yeah, I can still give her the pass.

It's um, Dragon Quest? Oh, wait, you haven't played 7 or 9 yet.

In lieu of having a class system each character has a set of five skill trees that they can invest into to get the equivalent of class abilities. The character exclusive trees are pretty good, and it's conventional wisdom that you should restrict yourself to two trees per character in order to max them out by the end of the game.

It's almost as great a game as V in my opinion.

It's definitely all in the voice direction, because she's fantastic in World of Final Fantasy.

Trying to decide if I should jump into Trails of Cold Steel. How long does it take before I get to the meat of the game? Slow starts just make me put off games forever.

Looking for something moderately fast paced with charming characters that I can just pick up and drop on and off at will. I think it looks like a good fit but I'm not sure. I played the first Trails in the Sky way back when and I got through most of the game, is that a good frame of reference?

The game doesn't ever really ever "pick up" imo and the whole thing is basically a game-long setup for Cold Steel 2, so if you're looking for something more tailored for casual play and don't plan to play all four (possibly more who knows) games in the series it might feel sort of pointless. While TiTS had a smaller-scale plot that worked for a single game (where is cooldad) and then introduced a larger plot at the end, CS1 doesn't really have anything outside of the larger plot resolved over the four games, so it feels very much like you're reading the first one-fourth of a book that ends just as things are getting good. That being said, the game is divided into mostly self-contained chapters, so in that sense it does have some more small-scale plot/gameplay goals to work toward. You might want to check out Tokyo Xanadu, which feels very much like Cold Steel minus politics but at the same time has an actual story to it you get to see conclude.

To be fair, Cold Steel 2 pays off in dividends on what it sets up in the first game, so its not like it's out to waste your time for 70-odd hours. CS1 is very much the prologue, but it nails down everything you need to know for what follows so CS2 can get right to the main plot from the get-go, and has a decent-enough story on its own.

I’m wrapping up CS1 now and I don’t think it really got moving until like chapter 4 which is halfway through the game. I really like the structure though. The various ways they break up the campus days, field studies, etc make it easy to continuously make progress in short sessions. Most of your assigned tasks take a few minutes to accomplish.

The only place you can learn the counter to that specific ability is when you fight Rocbouqet. I got super lucky and triggered the counter ability on the first turn, then ran away and left it for the next generation to deal with. I guess otherwise it's a matter of repeatedly running/save scumming.

Indescribably useful for the last boss. Essential really, given my party setup Unfortunately the options for non-male frontliners are sort of weak and I really needed an axe specialist, sword specialist and greatsword specialist
