They don't believe him, they only care that he makes the people whom they hate with the burning of a thousand black suns angry - angry as *they* were during Obama's administration. This includes the evangelicals, who silently hope that Trump's bumbling will bring about the Rapture/end of the world, so they can delight in watching the *sinners* who always ~persecuted~ them suffer in agony from their Heavenly perch.

On the other hand, the Soviets weren't exactly slackers and were the first to send an unmanned mission to another celestial body. After American sent a man to the moon they sent a remote-controlled robot to the moon which, while not nearly as flashy, was a feat of engineering of its own.

They also grabbed some of the Nazi engineers and quite a bit of their research and documents.

Both Space Programs were built on Nazi research.

The Chinese and Indians are probably the ones least dependent on Nazi scientists, but they also benefited from the first generation programs which were all a few goose steps short of a Nuremberg rally.

Landing people on Mars doesn't advance the state of the art of building rockets that can get nukes to Russia as fast as possible. Building a permanent base on the moon with silos would be a good deterrent. Developing fast, reliable suborbital transit would be, too.

It's probably fair to argue that it hasn't yet been replicated because after we got there we stopped giving a gently caress for some dumbass reason. That said, SpaceX is several years deep in development of their new rocket, which is intended to have payload capacity on par with the Saturn V - or ~60% more, if you don't care about reusing it.
