Generally liked the fourth season. Some highs, some lows, eps 2 and 6 were a snooze I thought. Especially 6, what with it trying to be like some ur-episode of the series, and with each substory you're waiting for something interesting to happen but are just left going ".... that's it?".

Still, nothing in this season as bad as "Hated In The Nation" from last season.

I'm confused by your take on 6. I thought the first 2 stories were really entertaining, and the finale was terrible but "that's it?" Is a an odd reaction to something so ridiculous.

Man I hate to say it, but you're not wrong. I had this feeling while watching season 4, and I think so much time passes between seasons that I didn't catch onto it before. Also I thought Adrian Brody was hilariously terrible this season.

Just blew through Ash vs Evil Dead, Punisher, Dark, and Mist over the past few weeks. Really liked the first two, Dark was okay and I don't know what kept me hooked on the Mist but made it through. Lots of unlikable characters including Adrian who has the most punchable face I've seen in awhile.

Anyhow, thinking about picking back up on Penny Dreadful. Does it ever pick up on the monster hunting? First few episodes, everyone was getting introduced, things started picking up, they went to a nest without too much much excitement, it had me hooked and then there were 2-3 episodes in a row that was pretty much Eva Green's character acting crazy (which she does an excellent job of) without much going on and I started the Wire and never went back to it. Should I give it another shot? I'm not expecting a Michael Bay vampire show, but it was described to me as kind of an early Supernatural set in the 1800s and maybe those people who told me that are just retarded or I didn't give it enough time.

Not exactly, no. It remains focused mostly on the cast and the weird poo poo they've got going on, whereas the monsters they're after tend to remain something of a backdrop. It's still a pretty good show (mostly on the back of Eva Green), but it's not hugely monster-hunter-y.

Both specials are really good, but as usual there's some iffy poo poo in there so if you didn't like the last ones for that reason, you probably wont like these. They're definitely both better than the last ones though.

He addresses the trans thing and expands on how he feels about making jokes about it without apologizing, but tries to seem more empathetic. Whether or not that is sufficient is up to the viewer I guess. I didn't really think the ones in the first special were all that bad tbh.

Edit: Truthfully he kind of doubles down on it a bit. if someone was bothered by that in the last one I wouldn't recommend this one to them.

I thought each season was slightly worse than the last one, so if the first one didn’t grab you I don’t think you’ll be happy with the rest of it. I honestly thought it would have been better with a few more monster-of-the-week(s) (say 2-3 eps, they don’t have to wrap it up in an hour) instead of these big season-long slogs. A lot of the show involves torturing Eva Green in various ways.

Yeah, WTF. He just straight up copies Don Corleone for his voice. Even if all Sicilian mobsters spoke like that, Brando's performance is to iconic to go anywhere near without drawing unfavorable comparisons.

Agreed that Black Mirror's morality play is a bit wanting this season, but I still had a lot of fun. I really didn't like episode 2/Arkangel, which dragged on and on and the conceit was straightforward from the outset. I 5/Metalhead more than everyone else, apparently. I found myself rooting for the protagonist and the dog, and feeling sympathy for the poor robot dog's hurt paw. I still haven't finished the finale but it seems sort of clip-showy. I liked the little callbacks, especially in episode three, having that song part of the episode and that "Wraith Babes" was an option on the hotel porno channel.

honestly, the difference there is that Pryor is speaking within his lane. he's no less affected by the use of the N-word than other black guys, and he's perfectly entitled to his opinion on the word, even if he's got a weird opinion. Chappelle, meanwhile, is punching down at issues he has little to no actual experience with and that do not affect him, so it feels a lot meaner and shittier.

I guess to me if something is funny it's warranted in stand up, and it was pretty funny, more so in the new special. Less so in the first. That said, he says some stuff that is going to rub some people the wrong way and if they don't want to engage because of that, it's fine and I'm not gonna fault them for it.

I guess what I don't get is why it's ok to make fun of almost everything, but then this one thing is totally taboo. If I'm watching Dave Chappelle I'm not really going in there expecting him to be sensitive to anyone. It's part of his schtick. Like, Bill Burr is another one of my favorite comedians and I disagree with 50% of what he says, but if he's funny about it, I still enjoy it.
