anyone with fascist leanings would already be supporting the iranian government, and not the protests, because the ideology that khomeini espouses is effectively already 'islamic fascism' (all social problems stem from a lack of piety in Islam, all other social groups that aren't muslims are inherently enemies of muslims, and should be treated as such, etc etc)

seriously, read up on the stuff he says, that's basically the long and short of it

so talking about these protests as being potentially fascistic is being incredibly stupid, that's not happening

iran is more like francoist spain than italian or german fascism

One Day I Will Return To Your Side.
Eh, I’d definitely call Iran an authoritarian dictatorship, but not at all a fascist state, Iran is more like communist China, a particular class who collectively rule the country (the clerics and the military) with some space given to controlled reformist and some opposition. For actual full scale fascism Arab countries like Egypt, Syria, Algeria, most of the gulf, etc. are actual full scale fascist countries that won’t tolerate even a minuscule amount of actual politics occurring in the country.

I remember once I read about a time Mohammad Khatami at the last couple years of being president when he went to meet a bunch of students at a giant hall, the students collectively started to scream and shout at him for not being able to fulfill his promises, they hurled insults and asked him tough question and after he was done responding and talking with them he basically said “ you guys are very fortunate you can talk to me as harshly as you’re doing now, if we had been any of the Arab countries you’d all be shot and in prison” and he was 100% right about that.

yeah francoist spain is even a bit much because they at least allow somewhat democratic elections with real if limited consequences.

There is some academic paper out there about which kinds of authoritarian states are the most likely to launch wars, and I believe the conclusion was that "bureaucratic authoritarian" states are the least likely to. That would be Iran and China. Obviously states ruled by charismatic strongmen are the most dangerous (Hitler) with military juntas somewhere in the middle.

It gets more specific though. Charismatic strongmen with large, educated constituencies are actually the most dangerous because they buy off the public through warmaking (again, Hitler's Germany). And the reason the bureaucratic regimes are less likely is because the bureaucracy itself and the factions within it are countervailing factors.

The details of any report are usually questionable, especially after so many American and GCC accounts have just actively spread disinformation over the last week. At some point the Basij are going to get unleashed though, and it's not too incredulous to think they have been recently.
