The Iive version of Birdemic is one of my favorites, hands down, of either MST3K or RiffTrax.

The live recording of Samurai Cop is hilarious as well.

Just to add to this: seeing Vader force choke the Karate Kid followed by Thor staking the Twilight vampire, wasn't all that funny the first time I saw it, and by the 900th time it's beyond annoying.

Add in the fact the song theorizes that it's a fun prank to play Rifftrax on unsuspecting people, as if the draw wasn't Mike, Kevin, and Bill, or Mary Jo and Bridget. It's like "Do you even know who your audience is?"

I know it's the same people, but the vibe of basically everything Rifftrax turns me off of it so much that I haven't been able to sit through a full thing of anything they've done, and I'm a huge MST3K fan.

I can't remember if it was in this thread or a blog post on tumblr somewhere but somebody out there explained their discomfort with the shift from the dopey yet punchy tone of the Joel era to the sharply sarcastic but increasingly mean-spirited tone of the Mike era, and it really put into perspective at least part of why Rifftrax can rub me the wrong way.

It also doesn't help that when they started as small fish with no direct downloads/streaming options, I had no easy access to movies to sync the riffs to, so I never really engaged with their business model to begin with.

The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

My first exposure to Rifftrax was seeing Rifftrax Live for Starship Troopers in the theater. It was wonderful, and the energy of seeing it in a group like that is not to be ignored. But yeah, my subsequent experiences with it have been very hit or miss, and for some reason I'm less forgiving when that happens than I am when a MST3K episode doesn't gel.

One of the better RiffTrax VODs I recommend is The Wizard. On the surface, it's already known as a novelty movie, acting as a commercial for Nintendo (namely Mario 3 and the Power Glove) and to a lesser extent Universal Studios, but beyond that it's such a strange movie. Stuff like how Reno has a video game side area in its casinos with pre-teen cigarette girls or there being a scene where an old man in a powder blue speedo is standing prominently in the background or the random Tobey Maguire appearance.

Then there's the competition itself which appears to have just three games. The adults in the movie who have no issue with three children taking buses and hitching rides with no adult around. The bounty hunter driving around in a wreck of a car and not being noticed. People carrying around an NES system and just plugging it in to people's TV at random.

There's more, but wow.

I feel like rifftrax has generally been getting less good the more they focus on using obscure movies they can do VODs of. Aside from truly exceptional episodes like Guy From Harlem, they rarely reach the heights they attain in such classics as the Twilight commentaries

I generally love all the RiffTrax Live. There's not very many (since they can't get rights to package and sell), but the live version of Samurai Cop is fun as hell. The outro music Kevin wrote (and performed by the guys) is really good.

And I actually prefer the more obscure movies because I have no interest in sitting through riffs of modern stuff. I also prefer my entertainment to be combined into one easy-to-swallow capsule, though, rather than having to pay for two separate things.

Yeah, this is me. I remember back in MST3K's heyday that everyone wanted them to do modern films (and I guess there was a taste of that with the Oscar special where they riffed the trailers) but I've had zero interest in watching them riff on modern stuff, even if its terrible.

Five or six years ago on Hulu they had a bunch of the obscure Rifftrax VODs on the service (Planet of Dinosaurs, some other old movies and a bunch of shorts) and I really enjoyed those because they felt more like old MST3K

You think the ending's bad, wait until you hear about the scenes they had to cut out to make it appropriate for the show.

That film was a learning experience for MST3K about screening their films beforehand.
