A while back, a friend gave me a bunch of steam codes from games he already had after buying some bundle deal. Ton of stuff that didn't ring a bell, some stuff like Deus Ex that people have told me to put on my definitely-play list, and two days ago, the dude says "hey, remember all those codes I gave you? Check out Stardew Valley" So I did. It looked like a run-of-the-mill illusion of time / secret of mana type clone that I loved as a kid. I can't really tell what's happening, but after starting it up, I'm suddenly 2 hours in. These retro games have been hooking me more than once in the last couple of years with stuff like Hotline Miami, Party Hard, FTL, and so on, but this poo poo just feels therapeutic. It's almost like the developers designed it to be therapeutic. It's the polar opposite of Eurotruck Simulator 2 with a character that escapes his lovely day job to live off the land and join some cutesy village community. As a card-carrying German, I feel almost dirty playing it. How am I to play a game that doesn't even simulate the daily grind and has me slaving away at tedious occupations for fake legal tender? Madness. I guess I'm gonna sneak an hour of this in after every XCom 2 session as a downer before bed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ot7uXNQskhs

Yeah Stardew Valley is a love letter to the original Harvest Moon and the work of one really dedicated dev who spent many years on it. Remember when Minecraft first came out back in 2009? Stardew Valley was in alpha at the same time. Dude just wouldn't release it until he was finished.

I know y'all said it was gonna be a long mission, so I thought "It's probably gonna be like 20 aliens, instead of the usual 6-9, I better strap in", but gently caress me. Restarted the mission halfway through, because I was at a point where I'd barely make it to the evac on the second level with three partially wounded out of five dudes. I kept moving the goal posts for restarting like a dope fiend tells herself she'll never trick for the next hit, until it became apparent that the mission was impossible to complete. The second approach was so loving cautious that it took twice as long. Had everyone set up overwatch, triggered each subsequent wave with my squaddie Ranger, hacked one mech per wave and primed it before walking it next to another mech. The second level was a cakewalk with all five folks alive, and with everyone on elevated positions, the roof was equally easy. My specialist with a boltcaster, and my sniper would instagib every recurring mech spawn, the sectopod was under continuous fire and wouldn't do poo poo until it was at 30% health, at which point I had Shen hack it to shut it down for a turn. Sustained my only injury when the fucker telescoped up and sprayed half the map and I couldn't to squat about it. That was the scare to end all scares, though. The exit from the first level ended up being somewhat comical on the second run, because I'm almost 100% certain I could have sustained picking off the new waves of mechs infinitely. Overwatch would damage or take out one of two at minimum, reloading and snapshotting on the following turn with three troopers would leave enough actions for overwatch for the next wave. Not sure if there was a spawn limit. Christ, this game. Duzzy Funlop fucked around with this message at 12:37 on Jan 6, 2018 |

Holy poo poo, Witcher 3 looks goddamn amazing with everything maxed + downsampled with DSR. I bet I could get it to run 4K@30fps, if I toned down a few options and my lovely PCI-E 2.0 slot wasn't bottlenecking my GPU at that resolution .

Man, I'm replaying RDR and gently caress it's so good, it's such a shame that it never got a pc release. Slo-mo nut-shoting dudes off cliffs and rooftops never gets old, but it could totally use some res and antialiasing updates I also never get tired of that sidequest where you help the dude build himself wings and then he just swandives off a giant cliff. Finally played Crusader Kings 2 after getting most of the DLC from this years steams winter sale. I tried the tutorial with the recommended age/playable character. Instigated a plot against the dude who dislikes you, despite the 94.7% chance of plot success, no one else would join the plot even with bribes + titles golden-showered on them, then the game told me to trump up charges against an old dude in that same region as originalHaterMan and imprison him. Imprisonment attempt failed, rebellion happened, I was at war but no actual war or army thing popped up, just constant seiges vs me that I lost because I had no idea I was at war. Lost my kingdom, became a vassal, somehow another war started, and I still had no idea what the gently caress the army did. Meanwhile, my main character got married, had 3 kids, cleaned up his murder-maze which buffed his Stewardship stat, then peasants threw chickens at the main character during a diplomacy/solomonic decision event, and then the game switched me to an heir while the original main character was still alive. All in all: wtf write large. Does CK2 get more interesting if you go ahistorical or with totally made-up nations/factions? And is there a tutorial that explains armies in CK2 that's not a LP or youtube video?

There is no cap on plot power, even though it's listed as a %. 94% is actually quite low. That and other non-intuitive mechanics are best learned by watching a tutorial on YouTube, unfortunately. Paradox map game tutorials are notoriously bad, and CK2's are the worst of the current generation. When you start playing, it's a very difficult game because there are dozens of systems interacting with each other to govern all your interactions among a giant web of personal relationships. You get the hang of it eventually, though. Having certain DLCs also makes a huge difference in terms of both difficulty and quality of life.

No cap on plot power in CK2, and Paradox continues their trend of "the internet will explain this mechanic in grognardy detail, why bother doing it ourselves" superpower as developers/publishers. Ah well, Paradox is light-years in quality beyond Stardock studios, seriously never play a Stardock studios game made after 2009, those games will be massively disappointing.

Nostalgia4Ass posted:When did Galactic Civilizations II come out? That was one of my favorite 4X games of all time. Gal Civ 2 came out way before 2009. Sins of a Solar Empire, co-developed by Stardock, came out in 2008. Everything else Stardock has made or published after 2009 has been either re-releases of existing Stardock games (cough SINS cough) or badly insert-adjective games at best. Like Elemental: War of Magic which came out in 2010. At launch it resembled a uglier minecraft with worse-character models, and no those weren't placeholder graphics, that was the game at maxed out graphics settings. The dialogue seemed like it was translated from the original english into japanese then russian then into welsch then back into english by a drunken gaelic is my 1st language septic technican. The actual gameplay in Elemental: War of Magic, welp, it kept the trend of being really bad. So bad everyone who pre-ordered Elemental got free license keys to the followup game, which also sucked real bad. Source for this info: I was one of the morons who pre-ordered Elemental: War of Magic, which cured me of pre-ordering games until Witcher 3 was announced. quantumfoam fucked around with this message at 07:26 on Jan 9, 2018 |

I thought they were going to do a fantasy version of the previous games and instead it was a weird mix of Heroes of Might and Magic and Dominions that didn't work and was unfun and unstable. I forgot about how much that game sucked. I also never bought Gal Civ III because it's reviews were bad and I had other games to play.

I forgot about how much that game sucked. I also never bought Gal Civ III because it's reviews were bad and I had other games to play. GalCiv3 holdoff was a wise move Hekk. Throughout it's development, Stardock was really cagey about dropping game info for GalCiv3, instead all the dev updates for GalCiv3 were about the pay for beta access to GalCiv3, the $100+ founders edition preorder that supposedly would have all future DLC + races + maps, how cool the game AI was in the beta(oh if you only had the chance to experience it ) + one or two screenshots of the improved alien race artwork......and that was it. I didn't preorder it, just sat back & waited for the GalCiv3 poo poo-show to happen....and the poo poo-show lived up to all my expectations & even surprised me with unexpected poo poo-showers. At launch, GalCiv3 was buggier/less stable than Elemental:War of Magic at launch, had less content than GalCiv1, 70% of the playable races in the older GalCiv games were locked behind "upcoming DLC", randomly generated star maps were DLC, the AI was DLC-access gimped, the ship design that was the best part in GalCiv2 was beyond gimped, and 4 months after launch, 2 pieces of DLC had appeared for the game. I think there is still missing DLC for the game years after launch. tldr summary: Even if you have the chance, avoid buying GalCiv3. Everything is locked behind DLC + the DLC is just reskinned GalCiv2 content.

mods change my name posted:How does gc2 hold up to something more modern like Stellaris nowadays, a space 4x sounds fun right now Hard to say. GC2 will probably seem dated compared to Stellaris, however the alien races in Galactic Civilization series differ enough to make a new playthrough interesting, and I'm not sure if any other 4x game duplicated the GalCiv ship designer thing outside of Kerbal Space. ship designer thing: You start off with basic hull sizes & shapes, and you can connect insane amounts of parts & structural pieces together to build insane beautiful knockoff goatse whatever spaceship designs. Depending on your level of tech & minutarization, you could build a Borg Cube knockoff easily, or construct a Deathstar Goatse with the weapons being fired from the ultra-hole, etc.

Yeah I've played it before and I really liked the ship designer thing, I didn't know if anyone else had done anything like that. I mean they all ended up being dumb poo poo like Ship with laser +1 and the enemy will have a million more than me anyway but it was still kinda neat. I might play it again I'm just not sure if I'm remembering it more fondly than it deserves.
