Chiang seems competent but boring in an Al Gore kinda way. He's probably better than the scuzzy faux-populist or the SF machine guy, but people don't seem to know much about him (at least I don't).

My dad loves Chiang, but my dad is basically a 70s "good government" style progressive who dislikes drama and "movement" liberals and has fond memories for Jimmy Carter and a genuine appreciation for Gray Davis and Jerry Brown. His support isn't always a good sign.

CONCLUSION: Almost too close to call. Almost. Newsom displays a defensiveness when his empathy is questioned. He's aware that he's being probed for emotional responses, and even expresses concern about this. However, this concern is alleviated a little too easily by our crafty V-K interviewer. Newsom is definitely a replicant. Probably a Nexus 5.

Also, Royce's district has a lot of overlap with the 29th state senate district and the local and state GOP have already gone all-in on the Josh Newman recall so any GOP candidates in the area who were considering running have gone hard on the Newman recall, and so there really isn't a viable pool of GOP candidates to fill that seat.

Meanwhile, there's like 6 democrats and there's a fuckload of money backing them.

Close, but I think he's from a different franchise

The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy. But these are new, they look human. Sweat, bad breath, everything. Very hard to spot.

Also this year is going to see a flood of retirements and decisions to spend more time with family (I expect Issa to announce any day now), which sets off a wonderful positive feedback loop. The bigger the tsunami looks, the more people leave office to get out of the way, the more open seats that become vulnerable to the tsunami, the harder it is to get good candidates to compete because why put yourself in the path of an avalanche (the big up-n-coming state GOP star in Ohio just said he was going to sit out this year's Senate race), the harder those seats become to hold, the bigger the tsunami becomes, the more people decide to nope out, the harder it gets to find good candidates, and on and on.

The City of Oakland is currently on the hook for $3M+ because one of their council members shoved an old Black Panther Party Leader at a BBQ restaurant. http://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/matier-ross/article/Shove-by-Oakland-city-councilwoman-could-cost-12480432.php

quote:

Oakland City Councilwoman Desley Brooks’ knockdown assault on former Black Panther leader Elaine Brown at a barbecue restaurant in Jack London Square could wind up costing the city’s taxpayers a whopping $3 million — plus attorney’s fees.

At issue is the city’s portion of the $3.77 million verdict handed down by an Alameda County jury Dec. 21 against the East Oakland councilwoman for knocking Brown to the ground during a heated 2015 exchange. The fight was over city funding for a Brown-linked nonprofit’s housing and commercial development.

Brooks had pledged to kill the funding, reportedly telling Brown the project was “of no benefit to black people.”

The war of words ended when Brooks shoved the then-72-year-old Brown over a set of fixed chairs at Everett and Jones Barbeque, the jury found. Brown hit her head on a table and landed on the floor on her back.
...
If the judgment stands, Oakland will have to dig into its general fund to pay more than $3 million to Brown. Only $750,000 would be covered by its liability insurance.

And because the jury found that the assault was a case of elder abuse, the city may be on the hook for Brown’s attorney’s fees as well. Bonner wouldn’t say how much he’ll be seeking, but experts speculated that the figure could run north of $375,000.

For a city that’s always scraping to pay its bills, it’s more than painful. The $3 million price tag, for example, is equal to all the extra funding Oakland plans to spend over the next two years to deal with its growing homeless camps.

I wonder what services will be cut to pay for this.

Specially Oakland's insurance will only cover $750,000 of the $3.77M payout. Leaving $3M to come out of the general fund.

They sent invites to "strategy house party" things a few times last year but the parties were always outside of Stanislaus County (more or less Denham's territory) and "filled up" which meant I wasn't even allowed to learn the exact address in case I wanted to show up anyway. Over time the emails just seemed to degenerate into political fundraising "The Rs did a thing and let's make them pay donate now" stuff and honestly I stopped paying attention to them.

But I hated Denham before he voted for the tax bill and now I really wanna see him out.
