https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...imore-hospital/quote:On Wednesday, a man who said he was a psychotherapist and a student at the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus posted a video of the woman being hustled out of the hospital by staff and left at a bus stop, her possessions strewn on the street. The woman appeared to have a wound on her forehead, and was wearing a hospital gown that was falling off. She grunted and shouted, and appeared to say at one point: “Please help me!” What the flipping gently caress?

Holy poo poo. Heartbreaking case. I kinda think it was dude they found not guilty, but with a co-conspirator. It would probably be solved if it happened today. Oddly not talked about much, which is kinda weird, since unsolved child murders tend to be one of those crimes than linger in public memory, especially three at once.

Follow up on storyquote:Baraka said that he stopped videotaping at some point to call 911 and an ambulance crew came and took the woman back into the hospital. He said he waited for two hours to make sure they didn’t bring her back out to the bus stop. He said he heard her say “thank you,” as she was lead away. Well, that's ni-- quote:The family told Baraka that the hospital had put the woman in a cab to a homeless shelter and that’s where the mother found her. He declined to describe her mental or medical conditions or why her family didn’t know where she was. Unbelievable. But I guess it's probably the best place to send someone who's homeless as opposed to dumping them on a sidewalk. http://www.baltimoresun.com/health/bs-hs-hospital-video-follow-20180111-story.html Proteus Jones has a new favorite as of 02:45 on Jan 12, 2018 |

Sure they had a chimpanzee in Jonestown and it was shot as part of the mass-suicide quote:As I gazed upon the scene, Colonel Gordon, the gruff no-nonsense joint task force commander approached. “Brailey,” he barked as he returned my salute, “Did y’all bring a psych tech with you from Panama?” (Author’s note: In the first edition of this book, written in 1998, I reported that Mr. Muggs was the only Jonestown resident from the United States who remained in Guyana. I was wrong. The mortuary affairs specialist who opened a body bag at Dover that was occupied by a gorilla told me the truth after he read my book.)

There’s nothing particularly gory or frightening in this story, but for some reason it’s set my teeth on edge. Busket Posket posted:There’s nothing particularly gory or frightening in this story, but for some reason it’s set my teeth on edge. A lot of this is will already be familiar to most people, but this is a decent write-up for trying to begin to understand the scope of the issue if you aren't already aware of the runaway algorithm issues. The real kicker, from that perspective, is where the article stops. It's...it's art. You get to the end, your attention is no longer on the article. You see 'top hilight', of the thesis restated at the bottom of the article, from accumulated user input. Below, and to the left, 'claps' and social media buttons beckon, boxed in at the top and bottom with an enticement to put yourself into the automated delivery of more content. It's nothing new. It's not all that strange. But it's framed perfectly to elicit that cthonic 'creeping madness' feeling. Kafka, Poe, and Lovecraft could only dream of this level of derealizing artificial reality. A content creator cries out, 'something is wrong!', their digital article tinged with desperation, marked with keywords and tagged with social media integration to draw the eye and appease the algorithms so they can get views. It's too late. The algorithms already run the show. The old, slow corporations are augmenting themselves with new automated processes faster than anyone can understand them, evolving with dizzying speed. Do you suppose they'll evolve fast enough to survive overhunting their prey to extinction?

Genie, a feral child found in 1970. Since she was a toddler up until age thirteen she was kept in a dark room tied to a very small child's toilet or tied up inside her crib. She was beaten for making noise and nobody else in the house was allowed to talk. She made remarkable progress with her team of doctors and psychologists until Genie's mother suddenly wanted her back when Genie turned 18. She couldn't care for Genie and Genie was shuffled to different, abusive foster homes---regressing all the progress she had made. She learned how to remain silent again, became incontinent, and was afraid to open her mouth for fear of vomiting. She is now thought to live in an adult care center but nobody has really seen her in decades. But by then research funding was starting to dry up and there was infighting amongst her team. At one point, Genie was overheard talking about her father, mostly to herself. As she learned more language and learned the concept of death, they got her to talk of her past. quote:Father hit arm. Big wood. Genie cry ... Not spit. Father. Hit face—spit. Father hit big stick. Father is angry. Father hit Genie big stick. Father take piece wood hit. Cry. Father make me cry. Father is dead.

I’ve never wanted to have children - in fact one of the best things about being an aunt is that I get to spoil my niece & nephew and then take them home to their parents - but Genie’s story always hits me in whatever tiny kernel of maternal instinct is left in me. I just wish I could have swept her up and away from all of that and kept her out of the shitshow that is the foster system. She deserves all of the ice cream sandwiches and hugs in the world.
