Look, restoring the Celestial Empire of California takes time. Though given that the Emperor apparently only managed to grab Gran Francisco while one of the kingdoms has taken over almost everything else, I don't think this attempt will be successful.

I like how they forgot to include any sizable cargo ports for themselves. San Diego's is kinda small (lots of navy poo poo, but only moves a fraction of the amount of cargo of the Bay Area or LA), and Stockton is even smaller.

Well if the new state included Oakland or Long Beach that would defeat 50% of the reason for New California.

True though half the stuff they've included already defeats the purpose of new California lol

The Mexican border only touches Imperial and San Diego counties so they probably wanted SD because of all of ARE TROOPS there, and Imperial County because it's super rural.

although looking at this map, that's pretty lol because El Centro and Calexico were strongly blue:

I'm pretty sure that map is wrong because the official website linked to a map on AGENDA 21 FUTURAMA DOT BIZ or something and that map has Sonoma and Santa Clara in Commiefornia.

Alternatively somebody realized while they were drawing up the lines for Conservafornia that they'd roped in nothing but a bunch of broke as gently caress rural counties and would probably need an actual source of jobs and economic growth, hence pulling in Santa Clara and San Diego (although that one is also half "are troops :911:")

I'm betting it's way less smart than even that. This is a small cadre of angry white old men getting together to design their conservative utopia, and one of them lives in santa clara county so that county had to be included. Same deal with contra costa county.

Contra Costa is hilarious because, sure, they get Danville and Alamo and Walnut Creek... but they also get Martinez, Concord, Pittsburgh, and Bay Point. And they don't even get the tech companies where they work because they're all in Alameda.

I mention this every time conservifornia chat comes up, but I think the reason these maps always look dumb as hell is the old guard Republicans aren't trying to secede, they're trying to recreate a state that doesn't exist anymore -- if it ever did. Most of SoCal isn't that conservative anymore, but the right wing types have responded to this by moving ever further into the exurbs where you can drive around with a gun rack and a rattlesnake flag without getting too many funny looks. They've lost touch with the urban areas and now imagine they can turn back the clock thirty years if they all just band together and kick the liberals out.

The problem with that is their constituency consists mainly of people who think "cosmopolitan" is a dirty word, so they're effectively everywhere and nowhere and there's no map you can draw that includes all the people who yearn for "new California" but doesn't wind up taking almost everyone else along for the ride. At least, not with the current county maps.

They want the California Reagan promised when he campaigned on killing the Fair Housing Act to ensure the legality of racial discrimination.

One dude talks about how if you live in California you absolutely need a concealed carry permit wherever you go - apparently he was in Stockton area 15-20 years ago?

Others go on about how it’s stifling to small businesses with the tax burden or how oppressive liberals are to people like them.

I mean yeah, some dumb poo poo gets suggested, like the whole vegan dog food at animals shelters in LA, but everywhere is dumb... but of note, we are also not Kansas or Oklahoma, actual failed states.

I got "I was just in California and I had to pay 15 dollars for breakfast!"

I always wonder if people who speak in earnest of California falling into the ocean really think that's actually possible, due to an amazingly poor understanding of plate tectonics? Or maybe just that they've heard the expression often enough that they think it's possible?

Or is it more like the gif of bugs bunny cutting florida off and watching it float out to sea: a hopeful and amusing mental image that nobody actually thinks can happen?
