I'm not being nostalgic, I wouldnt be allowed to vote for much of US history due to being too yellow and too poor. I'm just pointing out that the system was designed with a set of assumptions that are pretty loving unrealistic and its a wonder it didn't break down sooner.

Bogus Adventure posted:

And to be completely fair, it didn't take much for it to break down. John Adams and Congress managed to make it illegal to criticize government officials, with the exception of the Vice President (who was the runner up in the Presidential election). The Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 are pretty similar to what Trump and his chudmates want to get passed (make it harder for immigrants to naturalize, kick out "dangerous" aliens, and make it illegal to criticize the government).

Fun fact, it came up before Marbury v. Madison, so they were never appealed to SCOTUS for judicial review. Most people assume it would be unconstitutional if tried today, but most people assumed someone like Trump wouldn't be President.

Another fun fact, Jefferson's and Madison's response to the act brought up the idea of state nullification and secession, which helped give birth to the theory the confederate states used to justify secession.

The Founding Fathers were smart people, but they aren't the infallible philosopher kings that most basic history classes portray them as. They made some pretty dumb, petty, and awful decisions.

Completely forgot it didn't even take two presidential administrations before poo poo went south .

You can't blame Trump, he has a fiddle lesson he has to get to.

In the imaginary world where Congress manages to get their poo poo together and pass something, they're going to have to fly a copy of the bill to Mar-a-Lago specifically to have Trump sign it.

Oh no
Depends what your working definitions of “affects” and “military” are.

For info, while it’s not guaranteed, essential personnel that have to continue working without pay have gotten backpay for that time after the last two shutdowns, in 2013 and 1996.

On the one hand, I do hope that Congress works something out at the 11th hour, and that many Federal workers are spared the uncertainty and trepidation of suddenly finding themselves out of work and not knowing when they'll be paid.

But on the other hand, I really want to see Trump gently caress off to a party he's throwing for himself while the country grinds to a halt.

LA Times had this:

http://beta.latimes.com/politics/la-na-government-shutdown-20180117-htmlstory.html

quote:

Do all government programs stop in the event of a shutdown?

No. Here are the big categories that don’t:

Programs that don’t require annual appropriations. That group, which includes Social Security, Medicare and other so-called entitlements, continue without interruption.
Those entailing functions “necessary to protect life or property.” Law enforcement, the military, intelligence agencies and foreign embassies all will stay open.
Some programs that have other sources of money that will allow them to function for a while. Courts, for example, can spend money they have collected through fines and fees, funds that would allow them to keep functioning for a while.
The U.S. Postal Service. It’s a quasi-independent entity and does not depend on annual appropriations, so its business will continue as usual.

What are some examples of government offices that would close?

Federal parks and monuments and federally owned museums, such as the Smithsonian. Those are probably the most visible federal activities affected by the shutdown.
Offices overseas that give visas to foreigners hoping to visit the United States, many federal regulatory agencies, IRS call centers that provide assistance to taxpayers and most offices that handle federal grants and contracts will all close.
