How many days had Mahmoud been in this prison? Emaciated, covered in scars from car batteries and metal cables, he stood there, hanging in his cell, his arms affixed to the ceiling. Suddenly a clanking noise could be heard at his dark metal cell door as it unlocked. "Allah save me!" he screamed. First the torturer beat the bottoms of his feet with a metal truncheon, then looked at him and said "Don't worry, comrade. Allah isn't real, religion is a lie. The only true path is through glorious socialism!"

Mahmoud began crying tears of joy. "Thank you, oh blessed kismet! Praise Marx!" he shouted as the torturer began to peel his fingernails off with a pair of pliers. The great burden of false religious thought had been lifted off his upraised shoulders, which had permanent rotator cuff damage due to the constant shoulder dislocations. He decided that if he ever left this prison alive, he would explain to his fellow Syrians how wrong they were about Assad and the Baath Party. As rivulets of blood dripped from his hands onto his unwashed, greasy hair, he proclaimed "Truly this is the best of all possible worlds, for it is a secular country that I live in!"

I am mostly thinking of China when I make these comments, but the trend for authoritarian nominally socialist countries can seem counterintuitive from a Cold War propagandist’s perspective. Their “right” tends to consists of nationalists and defenders of the supposedly communist regime while their “left” tends to consist of people with more cosmopolitan values, oftentimes with sympathies for some limited neoliberal reforms as a way of fighting corruption and encouraging intergration into the global capitalist system. Conservatives should be understood as people that value stability and hierarchy, not necessarily people that support free market capitalism. In authoritarian “socialist” countries, this oftentimes means defending the party-state since that’s their status quo.

so you're differentiating Rojava out but conveniently ignoring the overwhelming number of communist forces under the Rojava banner?

You quoted the syrian communist party (which hasn't existed since the 80s and split into multiple tiny parties, one of which you're confusing them with) but not the rather long list of leftists under Rojava, international and PKK both. I guess if you exclude the overwhelmingly majority of leftists that disprove your point, you might be right in your own mind.

List the approximate number of leftist forces you believe to be fighting with the regime, we'll wait

It's always a good sign when allies are calling each other liars over a mutual conversation. Turkey keeps saying Trump didn't tell Erdogan to tone it down in Afrin, and that the readout the White House issued was typed up before the conversation. Meanwhile, the White House continues to insist that the readout was accurate. Trump and Erdogan are both liars, so it's anyone's guess, though it wouldn't surprise me at all if Trump was too stupid to stick to his talking points and the White House is just covering up for that.

Its a safe bet Trump didn't say what he was supposed to. He didn't do this during speeches, its hard to imagine him doing this in an actual conversation.

Actually this is the most active this thread has been in ages.

Also, the FSA and Southern Front still hold territory in the Daraa region and many of them were the same people who started the revolution. The Arab left in Syria has been horribly brutalized and suffered defections and cooptions, but it hasn't just disappeared.

The PFLP has gunned down peaceful protesters on behalf of the Assad government. That doesn't disqualify them from being leftist in your eyes, but you have disqualified over 10 million Syrians based on some sweeping generalizations about their religious character.
