Nah, it's mostly corruption. Either pandering to stay in a developer's good books, bribery or plain old fear of rabid fanbases.

After the hype dies down the real opinions come out. The next Monster Hunter will finally be the one with amazing graphics and a perfect entry for newcomers, too.

I tried Monster Hunter back in the day on the OG PSP.

In concept I thought I’d like it but even then it had clearly outdated mechanics. This was in the year 2006. It’s just loving boring and a chore to do anything.

I have never said anything remotely related to gamer gate.

I also accept that people like this sort of game, especially goons. I'm allowed to think they have bad taste.

I'm talking about fawning reviews for a game that has a lot of problems. These problems are glossed over or never mentioned at all.

Farewell, good Hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

I am gathering from reading the MHW thread that a lot of people are loving it, but these might be the people that are fans of the series already? Maybe for those that have never played the series it’s not that great. Because of all the hype I’ve kept watching some streams here and there and I can’t spot the finesse of any of the combat through all the janky clipping. And the graphics look really strange for an X game

I could definitely see it’s appeal from a fun grindy co-op aspect. A lot like Destiny sort of.

Time passes quickly on the weekend.

Quantum break did one thing that I wish more narrative and rpg games did, and that's "Previously on..." with a recap of the story up the point you are at.

There's been so many games live not played for a while and even though I want to play them, I don't as I can't remember the plot.

veni veni veni

Yeah the recaps are kind of nice. I actually think the whole TV show thing wasn't a bad idea, but they really didn't integrate it well and the quality off the show was just kind of lackluster.

It's really not a bad game, just really unremarkable. It seems like they wanted to accomplish a lot more than they did with it.

Is monster hunter a game that a person who’s never played the series would be in to? I’ve watched a bit of it and it seems to be in a world of its own. A few things stand out that make me hesitate to try it. There are a ton of menus and a lot of things to learn, the clipping of the monsters through both your character and the ground makes it seem a bit cheap, and it looks like the fights are trying to be dark souls but just aren’t nearly as complex.
Monster Hunter was doing the Dark Souls thing before Dark Souls existed. It's pretty much a series that changes the core very little and then heaps up stuff on top of it over time, which is probably why it still looks kind of janky despite the truckload of options. MH fans probably also demanded it stay that way, if I had to guess.

On the bright side for any newcomers, it looks like they have added more handholding to this installment than I've ever seen before. That's gotta be pretty vexing to the regulars though.

This is basically restating what's already been said but that's my hobby

RBX
Jan 2, 2011

Yeah for all the praise Dark Souls gets MH plays pretty much the same, removes the levels and enemies, and just sets you out to find and hunt the bosses in their habitat with up to 3 of your friends and rewards you with cool armors for doing so. You also get every weapon at the start and can freely change between them.

veni veni veni

Tbh that sounds like a sales pitch for Dark Souls more than anything. Which is allright because DS is a much better game. MH is pretty cool though.

Quantum Break was pretty good, actually.

Not the best by any stretch of the imagination, but it was pretty solid. The time travel story was solid and internally consistent... but you had to hunt down all the documents to "get" it.

Why even have an X if you're unable to tell what good performance/textures are?
