It's OK but not great. Soken has done some amazing original pieces, but it's really disappointing to see FF14 lean on the nostalgia crutch so hard.

I thought it was cool as hell that bravely second had a chef job, even if it amounted to being a more balanced chemist. I think every rpg with a job system should have a chef job.

FF4 passes the Bechdel Test I think solely due to the scene where Rosa helps Rydia overcome her fear of fire to melt the way to Mt. Hobs. It's a solid scene that really adds a good bit of depth and development for both characters. And of course the two never really directly interact for the rest of the loving game even though they're in the same party for the entire second half of the game. And I'm pretty sure they never interact at all in the sequel. I think Rosa serving as a mother figure for Rydia and helping her grow rather than Rydia growing up entirely off-screen in a benignly bizarre way would've been great for both characters, but FF4's story was still a bit too primitive I guess. Meh.

XIV also does a fantastic job of it. e: I'd raise more eyebrows at the plot point about Celes looking just like Maria, given that a leading lady in opera would almost certainly be no younger than 30 due to how your voice doesn't fully mature until 28~29, but that's less an inconsistency and almost certainly just the writers winging it and not knowing a single thing about opera.

Nobody has nominated XII yet. Ashe was the best character in that game and it also had Judge Drace who is in two scenes but is pretty great. But I'm inclined to agree with the support for X or X-2. A lot of the recent FFs have at least one or two great ladies but they kinda get drowned out by virtue of being one among many. X-2 especially is a game where they are front and center and treated more or less respectably. (excepting Rikku who, along with her brother Brother, apparently spent the two years between games doing massive amounts of whatever type of drug destroys your brain. But I love Yuna and Paine.) And going back to the VIII discussion from a day or so ago, I always kinda liked Rinoa. The problem is her entire character is subordinated to the romance with Squall. I'll never get over how her subplot with her father goes absolutely loving nowhere because who needs a healthy relationship with their father when they got a nice, broody boyfriend?
