Are you really going to go to bat for the film adaptation of TV tropes: the book? Eh, I was a comic book/D&D/video game nerd who graduated high school in 87, so I enjoyed the nostalgia wanking. Not too excited about the movie, though.

The best part of Ready Player 1 is when the main character challenges a love interest to prove she is a "human who has never had a sex change operation" and even demands an answer when she doesn't immediately answer him. This is treated as a perfectly rational question by the book and the narrative never addresses why it was so important to him.

So the train of death leads nowhere? Dang, truly horrifying. Also, what's so bad about hiking trails and 72°F (cause there's no way the creator of that image sees Celsius as anything else as satanic)?

oldpainless posted:I feel it should be something they tell you, not something you need to ask. What makes it weird in this context is that he randomly asks a woman to prove she's never had a sex change. She's not a particularly mannish woman. He doesn't say, "wow, you have really large hands for a woman" or "I've never met a woman with an adam's apple before" or something. That sort of implies he asks every woman he is interested in if she was born with a penis. Which is weird. And then he doesn't just ask "are you trans?" He asks if she can prove she's never had a sex change. What? I was born with a vagina, but if a dude asked me to prove that I was born with a vagina I would not consider dating that dude, because that's weird.
