It's got a great cast and it's very very very true to its pulpy roots. I like it a lot.

when I was single digit age my top heroes in order were: Wolverine, Robocop, The Shadow, the Bio-Booster-Armor Guyver, and Duncan McLeod. None of them took bad guys to jail or talked about their feelings like that pussy, Spider-Man (excuse my language, merely employing the idiom of 1996). Well, obviously, Robocop would take you to jail. IN THEORY.

The Craft has the same ending where she's committed for what they think are normal reasons not realizing her ability to do magic has been removed.

I just realized Batman Forever totally ripped off The Shadow. The part with Riddler getting his mind wiped and being in an asylum and not able to actually explain anything I figured was coincidence but both movies also have one of (their first?) kill consist of someone seeing an illusionary exit while being freaked out, which causes them to run out of a building and fall to their death.

Man The Shadow is just awesome in general. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned it but I really would kill for a movie where Nicholas Cage plays Lamont Cranston and John Travolta plays him when he's The Shadow.

What was the deal with Kent Allard? IIRC Lamont Cranston was in on it also and it was so that there was always the double rock solid alibi of Cranston being traveling off wherever if anyone found out it was "him" or that someone was impersonating him and Kent Allard officially died in a plane crash years prior?

I missed this and it's absolutely not true, he still has his entire sense of self and his intelligence. Only his ability to cloud minds has been removed.

Oh, it was absolutely stretched out. It has the same core problem as all the Netflix shows: It's got about the plot content of a trade paperback, but takes longer to watch than it would take to read Garth Ennis' entire run on MAX. And it's not executed with nearly enough flair or skill to make up for just how amazingly loving long it is.

I think that was most frustrating with The Punisher and Daredevil season 1 because if they were just ONE episode shorter each they'd be perfect.

Jessica Jones though, I love that show but I still can't believe the "TAKE ME TO SUPERMAX!" episode made it past writing and was filmed, talk about filler.

One of my co-writers got to see Black Panther and wrote a non-spoilery English review. If you are really a stickler about spoilers, the article only talks about the setting and the state of the characters at the beginning of the movie.

tl;dr: A good movie, celebrating African culture in a positive way, pretty good story and villain, wonderful music and good acting.

Synopsis for Shazam!

quote:

"We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word - Shazam! - this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart - inside a ripped, godlike body - Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong)."

While that's true. Shazam was pretty brilliant because the kid becomes the superhero. Captain Marvel was vastly more popular than Superman during his heyday because of this.

In my opinion they should have had kid Billy, since kids grow up so fast. If it proves popular then they have so much more room for sequels before the kid ages out.
