TIL that you can actually grow tea in colder climates. Huh. I honestly didn't know that.

It's pretty funny that the guy who is super proud of Britain and British achievements is furious to find that there's an imperial/colonialst history to the greatest symbol of British colonialist leisure (an international black tea blend with a Union Jack on the box). It's pretty sad that he's outraged about it for the worst possible reason (i.e. that non-white people were involved in any way).

From my experience Gypsy in the US means "privileged white girl who wants to identify as exotic and free" and they get mad when you point out that's racist.

They absolutely would not be considered white in the US. The Roma are one of the most racially oppressed groups in Europe, we have segregated schools in Eastern Europe who do not lets Roma children sit near their white ones. The US is all about racial segregation and suppression so it's unbelievable they would treat gypsies as white.

I could see how you could reformat the story and make Esmeralda from a trailer-park or something and make her white. But that doesn't seem to be what they were doing with their story. It's one of those ones where the characters race plays into her social standing and therefor what happens to her. I could see why people would be upset at casting a white girl in that role, the most beautiful Gypsy in all of Paris is in fact a white girl is not a great message.
No, none of the travelers are especially marginalized or suffer active racism the way they do in Europe; it's deeply loving weird how they handle the thing.

My favourite was that White Wolf, an RPG company, made a loving supplement about the Mysterious and Magical GYPSY PEOPLE. That's the level we're operating on here.

I had to look this up, because I'm not from Canada, and I'm honestly shocked it's as stupid as it is. They changed "all thy sons" to "all of us", and that's it. I honestly thought it was going to be some change to "god keep our land".

I'm not saying you (as a country) are racist towards the Roma, but if you had a significant number of Roma in your country you absolutely would be. Based on literally every other non-white ethic group you have there.

So you have no Roma in the US, but you want an analogue to tell Esmeralda's story then it stands to reason you would use one of the oppressed minorities you do have.

And I didn't realize gypsy was a slur until I was well into adulthood and started thinking about the origins of calling of a ripoff/disappointment a "gyp".

In america (and canada) racism is mostly based on appearance and language/accent rather than long running cultural conflicts. So many Travellers have the opportunity for their children to fully integrate and be "white," but only if they are willing to give up visible cultural markers.

The Roma also just get confused with Hispanics and Native Americans because of the dark skin and hair.

How 'bout them hawks news huh!
We have a lot of Romani in Sweden, and many of them are beggars. When I worked as a tram conductor I was enforced to dismiss them from the tram (assuming they didn’t pay; sometimes they did). Hated doing it, but I quickly learned that if I tried to ignore them, other commuters would instantly chase me down and complain about it. I was really miserable working there, due to the way I was encouraged to treat poor people.

Fun fact: Canada’s hate speech laws either came about because of, or were first tested because of (I can’t remember or find the reference on mobile) Roma staying in Vancouver! People were making signs explicitly saying to "Kill Gypsies"

It's connotation and denotation. The denotation (exact meaning) of "swarthy" is "dark-skinned." The connotation from years of use (implication) is "mean-looking/untrustworthy". Like how "egghead" technically just means smart, but the implications are insulting.

My internal personal definition of "swarthy" has always been bronze-skinned, hirsute, and swashbuckling. Zorro is swarthy. Sinbad (literary figure) is swarthy. Bollywood heroes are swarthy.

When I lived in Europe I went to a conference about discrimination towards Roma and similar groups. When I posted about it on Facebook several of my friends back in the States expressed surprise that it was an ethnic group, they thought gypsy was just a name for families of poor nomadic merchants without any ethnic connotations at all.

Also, it's amazing how quickly a group of white Europeans turns into a Klan meeting when Roma get brought up behind closed doors. I'm a white dude from the rural Midwest and even I was surprised at how quick and hard that poo poo comes out.

Behind closed doors? poo poo - you will see it in these forums!

“Don’t you Europeans treat the Roma like poo poo?”
