I think the Body are very hit or miss but my main issue with them is that Lemongrab is their vocalist. I have a high tolerance for weird vox but his are goofy enough to distract from the ugliness.

I don't like that track but after the comments on the The Body track earlier I just have to check: you do hear the organ right? It's staticy but there's a clear melody there. It's honestly not that different from a lot of black metal in terms of burying the melody under distortion, just textured differently. Also this is great too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFRoX3vIgew (video has a lot of flashing if that bothers you) Something about clear vocals over distorted rhythmic noise really gets me when it's done well. il_cornuto fucked around with this message at 23:45 on Feb 13, 2018 |

I really like Devin Townsend because he is one of the few people who can write a catchy pop song and make it sound heavy at the same time. I really like the odd choir/circus atmosphere he does a lot. Also his production is amazing.

I didn't like Lucky Animals much actually, I feel like his stuff after Casualties of Cool has been noticeably worse and more by the numbers than normal. Something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf4_LB32M6Q or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vLm5AetaZI or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gmr5XJw_c7Q would be my pick for his best poppy stuff.

Big Devin fan here, and glad that DTP is taking a break. He needs some fresh ideas and collaborating with other people will bring out the best in him again. He's said himself that the later DTP stuff feels somewhat forced.

The Addicted! version of Hyperdrive is so SO good. For me I think DTP peaked with Addicted!. Ghost+Deconstruction were good but I think at that point there was already signs of the pressure of making four albums back to back getting to him. Ki and Addicted felt a lot more natural. Not to say he hasn't had some awesome stuff since then but I think he really benefits from the time away from the grind.

I know nobody else listens to them, but FYI the new Therion is pretty great. I'm only halfway through but I'm really digging it. And there's a lot of it, at over three hours of music. Reminds me a lot of Blind Guardian's Night at the Opera, which had to grow on me, but this is clicking pretty quick. If you're into that kind of stuff, anyway.

None of it was bad, but I can't remember any of it now. I think it all just sort of slides into one.

There have been a few standout tracks for me (Dagger of God, Jewels from Afar, Night Reborn) but I think it's going to require a lot of listens to really be able to pick out some of the other songs. It's supposed to be more 'opera' than 'three CDs' but honestly the songs don't flow well into each other and it seems to be to be three discs of a number of discrete, stand-alone music pieces.

Their target demographic seems to be immature high school guys who love the August Underground films.
